Forgive me for pouncing on this out-of-context part of your post, Guard, but this brought something to mind that I don't think has been adequately brought up yet.

In TDK and Watchmen (and in Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass, coming out next year), there seems to be a trend of taking a closer look at superhero cliches and tics and what have you. I'm all in favor of that, but not in a Superman movie.

I hope we can all agree that a dark, grim, gritty and realistic Superman movie just wouldn't work. While TDK was a fine movie and a commercial phenomenon, I hope WB is smart enough to realize that while Nolan's approach worked perfectly well for Batman, it would not do Superman any favors. A Superman movie needs to be fun and it needs to be hopeful.

QFT, Watchmen needed to be grimy, and Batman has been grimy since TDKR, but Superman has always been about what's best about humanity and how Superman really is the biggest boy scout, Batman breaks arms Superman helps grannies cross the road (and stop missiles flying towards the Sand Andreas fault line)

A Superman movie needs to live up to this image:

One hopes they wouldn't go really dark.

My concept is all about hope at its heart, but I do think you've got to have darker elements in order for that hope to mean something in relation. You must have darkness for the light Superman and those around him provide to mean anything. Otherwise it's just...Superman again. Whether that darkness is natural disasters, mankind's inability to control its fate, war, bigotry or some kind, or just everyday crime. That's always been my favorite part about the comics, that juxtaposition of ideals.

Frankly, I'm a little tired of Superman movies where everyone sort of just accepts that there's this guy with ridiculous power flying around doing what he does beyond the occassional doubletake. Mind you, I don't think we need to go into "Joker" territory and start questioning the nature of humanity, but I do think there are ideas and conflicts that deserve to be at least touched on in the Superman mythology. I think the problem with SUPERMAN RETURNS is that Singer made everything so somber that even the "fun" elements (Superman flying with Lois, for instance) felt dramatic and dark. It didn't help that Brandon Routh just didn't have a ton of charisma for the character.

I'm sure you already know it, but WB aims for a dark, gritty, TDK-like atmosphere for the next Superman. I agree with your post, but no matter what good the movie is, if it doesn't have any real enemy for Supes, well, it would be Returns all over again.

Yin and yang, huh? You've got a good point there. Just so long as the movie and our hero stay optimistic through the whole thing, that'll work. Don't dwell on our problems, focus on our ability to overcome them.

You know what the sad thing is? I think Routh would be better equipped to handle Superman now than he was back in 2006. He looked the part perfectly, he was just a few years too young and inexperienced. Especially against Christopher Reeves. Still, I don't want to see him back in the cape for this one. The further we can get from Superman Returns, the better.

On a different subject, I personally hope that we don't get into the origin story again. We all know that Superman is the last son of Krypton, we know he's weak to alien rocks, we know that he grew up as a poor farm boy and we know he has a fortress in the Arctic. We don't need to spend half the movie recapping all of this. Just give the death of Krypton a five-minute prologue (if that) and then get us to the action.

I want Gorilla Grodd.
We have had the teen-soap tv of Smallville, and the castrated de-vamp of the 70's movies in the most recent outing. Now there's talk of going down the grit-road? Superman is comic-book fantasy, not gritty real world TDK-ish carry-on. Set the damn thing in an alternate 1965 and have some saturated-colour fun with it. Imitating the gritty-esque trend would be jumping on a bandwagon well after it has passed. A new Superman movie is surely an opportunity to harness the whole thing to some fresh style.
And Brad was a little too Will n' Grace, don't you think? Metro-superman. It'd be cool to have someone who had the physique of the Supes in Kingdom Come.

Not to be a nerd or anything, but Grodd is technically a Flash villain

I still want to see Darksied, at least hinted at, with maybe Brainiac as the villain in the first one.

Dr. Brooklyn a nerd? Never! An expert, for sure!
I stand corrected. My Supes/GL/Flash comics reading days were back in my early teenage years. Some of the details have merged together in a kind of Justice League melange... which is actually the movie I'd be most interested to see.

More or less.

Routh looked and sounded the part quite a bit. I just don't think he was much of an actor. And when you're not much of an actor in Bryan Singer's movie, there's something wrong with your acting ability. Or...not appropriate for the role, at least. I haven't seen him do much better elsewhere. I don't know. I wouldn't hate it if he returned, but if there's someone out there who can bring Superman's fire, and not just Superman's presence...

I would personally like to see Superman simply not know where he's from, and discover it later on in the franchise, giving some drama to that element beyond "By the way, Clark, you're from another Planet". As far as rehashing stuff...there are a lot of things we "know" about Superman, but someday, some kid's going to stumble on the latest Superman film and it will be his introduction to the character and the world. :).

QFT

I've been wanting a JL movie since I heard the rumors and watched the show.

Wanna read my TRANSFORMERS-inspired JLA script? It's got Darkseid. Everyone loves Darkseid.

Perhaps, did you write it or get it through your connections?

I wrote it in a week when I worked at a security place a few years ago before the actual project got up and running (and then tripped and fell over). I had nothing to do for about seven hours every morning from 4AM on, so I wrote a JLA script. I never bothered to actually spellcheck it or edit it much, but...

Here's a link to read it on a forum at Bluetights.

http://www.bluetights.net/theplanet/sho ... hp?t=25339

It was sort of my attempt to feel like a kid again without completely forgetting the adult elements of the JLA. I say "inspired by TRANSFORMERS" because I absoutely loved the scale TRANSFORMERS hinted at, and because at the time, I wasn't real good at putting together a compelling storyline or decent structure. I don't know, this was sort of a fun thing, but I'd love to see what some of you think. Most fans just read and go "Wow, obscure characters! Battles, and it's not an origin story! Great job!" Some intelligent feedback might be just what the doctor ordered.

I read until just after the island rescue... it's really good but it's missing one thing...

I do like your style, but another question... (I hate myself for wondering almost as much as I hate him) but where's Aquaman?

I hate Plastic Man, though. Just don't like that guy. Never did. But a nice joke with the Elongated Man reference. Did I mention that I hate him as well? ;)
