"Watchmen" dominates video charts

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Blu-ray Discs are showing some real clout.

"Watchmen" shot to the top of the national home video sales and rental charts its first week in stores, with 36% of the total unit sales for the superhero comic adaptation coming from the high-definition edition.

"Coraline" snagged the No. 2 spot on all three charts -- the Nielsen VideoScan DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales charts, and trade publication Home Media Magazine's rental chart. A solid 18% of the cartoon's unit sales came from Blu-ray Discs, a surprisingly strong showing that indicates the format is fast moving out of the early adopter phase and into the mainstream.

The Nicolas Cage drama "Knowing" placed third, again on all three charts, with 17% of its sales in its third week of release coming from Blu-ray.

"Robot Chicken: Star Wars -- Episode II" debuted at No. 6 on the DVD sales chart for the week ending July 26. Three TV DVD season sets also finished in the top 10: "Prison Break: The Final Break" at No. 8, "Psych: The Complete Third Season" at No. 9, and "Pushing Daisies: The Complete Second Season" at No. 10.

Thanks for the heads-up, cmr. Good to have confirmation that Watchmen is indeed selling well on DVD.

What's even more interesting to me is that it set a new Blu-ray record. Blu-ray.com wrote: A full 36 percent of disc sales of Warner's 'Watchmen' have been on Blu-ray. This is a record-breaking figure, even for action movies. For example, back in September 2008, 'Iron Man' got "only" 17% of its sales from Blu-ray. The previous BD percentage record was for 'Quantum of Solace', released March 24, 2009, which got 28%.

It seems that the increased popularity that many of us predicted upon its DVD release is taking place. Ladies and gentlemen, we have this generation's Fight Club.

I think we should wait a little bit longer until we make that call.

i'm kind of expecting this as a product of the increased popularity, (and gradual decline on price so it's now only a couple of £s more than the same DVD instead of £10 a year ago) of blu-ray and the fact that watchmen is an effects heavy movie, i think this will either be broken or drawn by Star Trek.

^ I don't think the BD record it set is a reflection of its popularity. I mean, lets say only two people in the whole world bought the movie, and one bought Blu-ray and the other DVD. Blu-ray.com would say "50% Blu-ray! New record!"

On its own that's correct, but we also have to take into account that it is currently (or was when i last checked) the top selling release on Amazon, both on DVD and BR, so while we can't extrapolate from that if it is also setting any new records in regard to the total number of units sold, it must be selling quite well, at least if we take amazon sales as an indication.
