I was debating whether or not to post this at all because there are tons of reviews of Watchmen out there. But I decided to anyway because I found it so very amusing, and a little bit sad. The Daily Mail are the most right-wing newspaper in the UK and this is what they had to say about Watchmen. Thought we might get a little conversation out of it. I completely understand that this is not the only opinion of it's kind, there will be other papers who share this view. It's just disturbing seeing as the Daily Mail has a fairly large following, despite it's being a load of tosh. So I apologise if this whole thread is pointless.

The last couple of paragraphs really annoy me. I think it's obvious the journalist hasn't read the GN. And Blair Roche wasn't "torn apart by dogs." She was chopped up and fed to the dogs.

This just proves that the majority of the right-wing is incapable of understanding shit other than the abysmal writings of Ayn Rand.

Well exactly. I mean, there's no reasoning with these people, but to say that the only people who'd enjoy it would be sociopaths is just.....unnecessary. And laughably ironic that they call the characters "alarmingly-fascistic vigilantes".

I'd say I must fall under the category of "deranged pseudo-intellectual".

My mother reads the Daily Mail. After she read this back in March she came up to me and without blinking asked "Are you a sociopath?"

"And it's one too many movies - after X Men, The Dark Knight and Push - set in a world where crime-fighting superheroes have been outlawed.

That unoriginality, combined with flat dialogue and soulless direction, would be enough to make this a bad movie, but it's also an example of comic-strip cinema at its most pretentious and overblown."

I didn't know The Dark Knight inspired Watchmen's setting.

Ha! The whole article only proves that the guy can't write for shit. He can't even research properly. But the point is, how many people are influenced by journalists like this? How many people share his opinion, and why? Aside from being....easily manipulated and unable to see Watchmen in the bigger picture.

I never meant to insult your mum! Sorry if it seemed like that at all. You should have humoured her and said yes.

I think we all do. Apart from the people who know what they're talking about, unlike myself, as you can see from my half-assed attempt to start a thread.

Wow I just hope people can see how uninformed he is. Also I have no respect for a journalist that feels the need to call anyone that disagree with his tastes "sad sociopaths," (are sociopaths ever happy ones?) "deranged pseudo-intellectuals and brutalised, immature men of all ages" He left immature women behind so is also sexist. :P

I would just like to raise my hand as a right-wing conservative, and say that the article is complete and total bullshit. This jackass has no understanding of Watchmen, its themes, or comic books in general. The stupidity that falls from it leaves me speechless.

Heheheh......heh.....heh. I'm beginning to regret starting this thread at all now. TGWTG is hilarious.

Again, the use of "right-wing" in the thread title was in no way meant to offend. I respect your being right-wing, but this guy is obnoxiously so. It's like the New Frontiersman of Britain. Just this week one of its articles has broken the UK record for the number of complaints lodged, 21,000 I think, many to the police. And silkspectre3: the sad thing is that there will always be a fair amount of people who agree with him. SO! Let's discuss perhaps. I'm not sure how to begin, maybe Mr. Curi can start once he's calmed down.

Oh, I'm perfectly calm. I just love an excuse to use that photo. :)

The thing about discussion is that usually, it requires two or more points of view. We all seem to be of the same mind in regards to this article, so there isn't really much debate to be had.

Fair enough. :) Abandon ship methinks. Unless people just want to vent frustration or something.

Aw, bless. I wasn't offended. Just trying to show the other side, as it where. ;) We can agree...to agree. :D

I don't think the thread needs to die off. It's a film that a lot of viewers just didn't "get", and you can find some amusing -yet equally disturbing- rants on YouTube from people who think the movie is "Satanic" or that Alan Moore is a Mason.

What a ridiculous, uninformed and overall terrible "review".

^You're right, I mean the guy can't really be defended. He's appraoched the movie expecting to hate it. He's misunderstood it, like so many of the average movie going public who never read the book and therefore don't get the whole significance behind Watchmen. They just viewed it as a comic book movie with too much thinking and not enough action.

 Really? Could you maybe link some?

Awesome! I don't like to offend. Different viewpoints are always good, as long as they're not trollish. Like the twat's from the article.

Actually, thought some neo right-wingers seem to be discovering her, Ayn Rand is not usually considered "right wing" or conservative. She was an atheist who constantly pissed off the right wingers on most social issues. And pissed off the liberals on most economic issues.

She basically believed that people had the right to do whatever the fuck they want... but that they should also bear the consequences, to include control of the fruits of their labors.

Kinda hard to poke a hole in that. It's pretty voguish from time to time to poke at Rand, but I've never seen anyone do it successfully. She was an amazing logician.

So, yeah... the right wing conervative nut jobs suck... but if you want to poke at Ayn Rand, you'll have to invest more than that cheap shot.

The Daily Mail is hilarious. It is all doom and gloom, and has the longest headlines ever. It is amusing to read on a comic value. You should have seen the fuss they made when Madworld came out on wii, and the fuss they made over "emos"

Search Daily mail madworld and daily mail emos to find

and here is the satanic watchmen you-tube video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfHhIzUoXgI

Having now watched the video i can safely say he did not get the film, and completely overlooked many aspects of it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW-du5ToDEc&feature=related
This one is also pretty amusing. similar sort of thing.
