You know, maybe it's because I love dark humor (more of that on the Suicide at a Watchmen Showing Thread) but I really like Swine Flu.

Let me explain it: It's Globalization* at it's maximum expression. No matter where are we from, we are going to die from this. No matter if you have lots of money or you live in a favela, we are going to die from this. It's like the Internet of diseases.

Dunno, I found it amazing. And here in argentina we have one confirmed case (but he came from Mexico, so I don't know if it counts).

*Dunno if it is the right word, sorry

If you lived on a deserted island, and cut off all access to the outside world, wouldn't that be enough to prevent the flu from infecting you?

Not quite. So far this is too weak a flu to credit with such power.
I see what you are saying, a virus doesn't descriminate. It's some kind of social equaliser, but someone with access to clean water, quality food, and anti-virals (which are expensive) does have a better chance of survival than someone without those things in this case.

Now, if you were talking about something with the potency of Spanish flu then maybe you have a point. That could pretty much take all comers. The weaker flu's, though, are not so even handed.

Probably, though I would rather have the flu.

Fine Flu. What an awesomely terrible line. It's almost inspiring.
I'd say that beats the guy who wandered up to me at a bar and drunkenly informed me that he was a Kennedy.

I hope you didn't let him drive you home! ;)

Funny story.

Just yesterday, a campus-wide e-mail was sent out as a notification that some student had tested positive for the ol' H1N1. It's also worth pointing out that the public schools near my college were recently shut down by the Health Department as a possible swine flu risk.

The student in question and all of his/her recent contacts were isolated. The whole campus was abuzz until later that day, when another campus-wide e-mail declared that the infected student just had Influenza A.

I think that's pretty emblematic of the whole situation right there.

Just thought I would bump this thread as Swine Flu seems more prevalent in the news now than it was before. Looking back it seems most of us dismissed it as the latest media scare. Does anyone still feel this way or are you taking this more seriously? Will anyone be getting the vaccine? I myself am on the fence about it. While I'm never keen on getting flu shots, I was sick with a cold recently and as usual felt terrible. And that's with a cold! I think the last time I had the flu I felt like I was going to die. I just have a poor immune system. I had a flu shot a few months ago but I'm not sure I want to get this vaccine.

The news coverage passed the ridiculous threshold a long time ago, imo, but now it's just unspeakably.... blergh... I say this because the swine flu crap seems to have moved home from the main news to Sports (specifically: football)
Yesterday, for instance, I had the joy of reading an article (the main headline no less) yesterday titled "Spitting on pitch 'is flu risk'"

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti's advice:
"I know what to do if I have the flu. It's my grandmother's prescription - hot milk. Alcohol - red wine. Fantastic."

About 93 deaths in Canada so far. I don't know if that number is high or not. Latest death was a seemingly healthy 14 year old boy. It's hard to say how bad it is. It's not like "The Stand" or anything. Although Obama did call call it a "national emergency".

I don't think that we can just pass it off as media hysteria, at least not entirely. The other day I got a pamphlet in the mail urging me to get a flu shot, and I never get notices like that in the mail.

i'm still passing it off as hysteria, considering i live in where the whole outbreak spiel started, and nothing seems to be going bad here.

I have to get the vaccine because I have chronic lung disease. If I end up getting the swine flu and die, I am coming back to haunt my coworkers.

i just found out my dad has been diagnosed. i hope he's ok, since he was a heavy smoker for 40 years, giving up only very recently, and has pretty low lung capacity. what pisses me off though is he works for the NHS and got it days, literally days before he would have got the vaccine for free!!

Tough break. Hope he gets better.

My sister was sick with a flu for a few weeks but I don't think she was tested for it. I don't really want to get the vaccine but I have a bunch of nieces and nephews and I'm more concerned that I would get sick and pass if off to them.

Condolences, Avatar.

For my part, my parents are both doctors (optometrists, but still!) who run a very active practice and see roughly a dozen patients each day. Getting vaccines for us has become a very high priority and I've never gotten sick as a result of any vaccination.

as long as your dad keeps himself medicated and keeps himself in good shape (like eating and sleeping and exercising normally) then he should be fine. swine flu deaths occurred due to poor treatment.

My aunt was diagnosed with H1N1 recently, I just hope she's feeling fine and the vaccines would arrive soon. I know some people are uneasy about getting vaccinated, but in such desperate times, it definitely calls for desperate measures. Meaning it's all worth the risk.

The conspiracy theories which abounds this incident would have been hilarious if there have never been a person died as a result of the H1N1 virus. I mean, such paranoia would only make things worse. And there's already people running scared of the vaccines because of a cheerleader turned dystonic after allegedly taking the H1N1 vaccine.

People die from regular flu's. This is just another media scare. I know people from around where I live who had it and are perfectly fine now.
