Hello all.

So, funny little preamble. I just bought the Director's Cut and was cross referencing it with my comic copy when my 21 month old son points at the book and asks, "Person there"? I introduce him to the characters and show him some tame scenes from the movie. Turns out he thinks Nite Owl is the coolest thing since sliced bread. Every day now he says, "Nite Owl, Owl Ship" and even, "Rorschach". Of course it'll be many years before I let him read the comic or watch the film, but guess which two Medicom Kubrick figures I've ordered for his xmas stocking?

Anyhow, I'm trying to come up with an Owl Ship for him to play with too, but all I can find is the collectible kind. Here's my question. How can I provide him with a toy Owl Ship too. Kubrick Nite Owl and Rorschach don't have to fit inside although that would be an added bonus. I'm thinking there must be some DIY toy makers somewhere who have the solution for me, but I can't find them anywhere. Can anybody tell me what to do or where I can get my answers?

X

And i don't have any useful advice. Just funny one sentence comments.

The tenement fire is good. Great shots of Nite Owl piloting the ship and when Silk Spectre goes wide eyed in slow motion as the explosion happens I call out, "Oh no, run Silk Spectre, run"!

Rorschach investigating the Comedian's apartment is not bad. We have no nudity issues here either so Rorschach notifying Doctor Manhattan is ok too. Anything else is either inappropriate or too boring for him 'cept maybe the Owl Ship crash in Antarctica.

Hey, that's a really great idea, it's the same thought that I had actually. I'm planning to make my own custom Rorschach and Nite Owl II for it, except I needed the skills and materials to do it.

That's like... super adorable.

What scale are you looking at? A super easy quick fix is to make cardboard cut outs and put them on one of his scoot-car toys he can sit in if you own any already (I used to love those things when I was wee) but if you're looking to make something for the kubric figures to fit in (those are like lego men, right? please correct me if I'm wrong I'm still havin' my morning coffee and the world's still fuzzy) you could try to get creative with kubrics or legos and build your own that way- you can always paint it if you don't have enough brown and gold legos! ;) if it's for a little kid you might want to glue it with non-toxic plastic glue of some sort. You can ask at a craft store, they'll probably know what you need. (Like where they build model trains and stuff) it'll match his action figures and won't break if he drops it. Just needs a bucket of leggos and your imagination. :)

There's other ways you could approach it too, what sort of toy were you imagining?

Ideally, something like the Millennium Falcon where the top comes off or something. Gluing Legos isn't too bad an idea. I might go there. I guess the best thing would be if there was a toy already a lot like the Owl Ship and I could just tell him it is the Owl Ship. otherwise, a link to a toy making forum might yield more responses too.

I was going to build my own palace but I don't have the money, the skills, or any of the resources or foresight.

..I'm partially sorry.

I saw that. It's brilliant, but I highly doubt he'll give it up for my budget.

And why are you telling me this? Nothing personal, I'm curious, really.

How about using clockworks for the Owlship? That would be nice.

I was...uh mocking you.

I thought that it was funny how you said that you were going to make your own action figures but you didn't have the skills or the materials. I was making a point of that.

I apologized because I felt kind of bad but I said that I was partially sorry because apparently I wasn't sorry enough to not do it in the first place.

Trust me, I've heard worse than that, so I have nothing to worry about. And if you seriously think that I'm in the least bit offended by your mockery which springs from your delusions of grandeur, then you're sadly mistaken.

With that in mind, I bear no hard feelings towards you. I was actually stating my own plans since the author of this thread and I, coincidentally, have the same thoughts. Unfortunately, it isn't materializing at this time due to lack of skills or materials, I only started this interest of customizing action figures just recently.

Which brings us back around to my sarcastic comment.

Anyway, author of this thread X-guy, buy your kid tons of Batman and Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers figures. He'll get Watchmen out of his mind and you can stop worrying about this sort of thing. Worked for me. He probably won't know what the original power rangers are but just throw them at him. They're better out of context anyway.

Also, Godzilla. That too.

(And yes I'm suggesting you go out of your way to get the original power rangers toys)

No way. Batman is sooooo 20th century and I hate the Power Rangers. I think it's cool that his first action figure will be Nite Owl and Rorschach even if he can't grasp the full significance of them for some years yet.

I was initially kidding but now it's personal.

I see nothing wrong with Watchmen toys though, I mean, so long as they are not really familiar with issues that can engender a lot of controversy then I don't think such comics are for them. I've got one friend whose young brother (at the age of 10) got acquainted with DC Comics characters like Batman, Sandman (Wesley Dodds) and Rorschach, but was unaware of a comic called Watchmen and I think it's better to keep it that way. However, I have to agree that it's a good idea for children to get acquainted with toys of their age like Pokemon, Superman and as you've said, Power Rangers. Of course that's just my opinion, the rest is up to the parents' judgment and foresight on what's best for their children.

Well, I was initially suggesting of a way to make toy vehicles that could be wound up and go, with clockworks built inside it to do the trick. I was doing Google search on "How to make toy vehicles" in a bid to find a solution to both our problems, well, at least theoretically.

Yeah but I was kidding about building a palace so...I guess it's moot?

Anyway, So here's what you do, X-guy. You take Stretch Armstrong and G.I. Joe.

You throw those in the garbage and give your kid some nice Mr. Freeze.

Preferably the animated series version. No one likes ice puns.

Yeah, kind of random arguments over really silly shit aside....

Yo man, I'm a pennyless hobo crafting together my own working rorschach grappling gun so personally making a toy owl ship isn't that far fetched to me. XDD

Another thing you could try to do is to get crafty with fun foam. If you're crafty enough (teehee) you can construct the proper oblong out of strips of brown fun foam hot-glued or super-glued together with more fun foam for detail work. Just look at any nice reference material you can find and think back to your basic geometry classes. Once you've made the strips and glued them before sealing it shut just stuff it with cotton fill or something to help it remain sturdy. It'll survive even being tossed from the roof, I'm sure. :)

Dammit now I want to make one.

Thank goodness, an architect to the rescue!

Well, initially I was wondering why you're telling me about your plans to build a palace which is irrelevant to the discussion at hand, so, yes.
