I was going to start a thread on this but it's a good thing I searched first.

It looks pretty goo-wait what's that?

Oh, it's the sound of Arthur Conan Doyle rolling around in his grave.

Why? Sherlock Holmes is no different than Spiderman or Batman in that you can have different interpretations of the character yet maintain what makes them great characters. All I see is a different interpretation of the character, and I don't really mind it that they're injecting some humor and action in it.

Personally, I'll just be happy to see a Watson who isn't portrayed as a bumbling idiot.

I'm reserving my judgment on the rest, however. I have my doubts about the "Aleister Crowley" angle they're going with for the villain, though Mark Strong's acting talent is well beyond reproach.

Indeed, Watson was always quite the ladies' man in the books. People tend to forget that Holmes was mainstream, mass entertainment of a fairly rollicking nature for it's time, almost pulp fiction. This latest interpretation may go some way to redress the slow, staid, drawing-room tones associated with the character thanks to the (worthy yet often sleep-inducing) Rathbone-starring movie versions of the 30's and 40's, and will certainly right the wrongs done to the property in it's time-travelling Malcom McDowell phase of the 80's.

It looks too Hollywood to me.

I'm pretty sure that's why I dislike it so far.

It'd be quite unlike (pre or post-Madge) Ritchie to make anything that felt Hollywood. His stuff's British through n' through, and dead proud of it too!
If by Hollywood, you mean full of explosions and fisticuffs, then, yeah... but that could just be another case of trailer-itis, where the bums-on-seats boys at the studio put their most A.D.D. hatchet-guy editor to work to ensure the plebs buy tickets to see shit blow up.

Yeah that's pretty much what I mean.

Maybe It'll be good though. I'll reserve further judgement until I actually see it.

I think the movie looks completely awful. When I think of Sherlock Holmes I don't think of dry humor and sexual innuendos. I guess it also doesn't help that I'm not a fan of Guy Ritchie at all. I shan't be seeing it anytime soon.

Well, madvillain, it could be as Mr. Pain said: Maybe the crude jokes and innuendoes were played up purely for advertising purposes. On the other hand, there's Rachel MacAdams' wardrobe. *awkwardly loosens tie*

And speaking of advertising, "Holmes for the Holidays"? Someone has got to be fucking kidding.

'Holmes for the holidays'??? Holy crap. One of the good things about living on a wee Indonesian island is being spared that kid of nonsense. That, and the monkeys I am training to do my bidding...

i'm actually looking forward to this, as as to the comments of ACD turning in his grave, i don't think so, from what i know of sherlock holmes this movie just looks like it is equally as faithfull as the old interpretations, but at the other end of the spectrum. sherlock homes was meant to me a proficient fighter, something never shown in the old movies/shows, and like mr pain says, watson is a bit of a ladies man in the books, again something unaddressed in the oldies.

i really have no problem with it, i do however wish they found a brit to play holmes, maybe christian bale could have pulled it off, but probably not in the way RDJ is portraying him.
maybe hugh laurie could have made a good holmes? or maybe he's a bit too old now?

I'll see Sherlock Holmes anyways, unless the critical reviews are bad. I must say that I always knew Robert Downey Jr. was awesome. I wish he was my best friend. Notice that I didn't say "I wish he was my boyfriend/husband/lover/whatever." Even I know that he's too good for me.

interestingly House is apparently based loosely on Holmes, and the fact that Holmes sounds like Home and home and house have similar meanings is not a coincidence.

(according to wikipedia anyway)

Sherlock Holmes ironically played by robert Downey Jr.

RDJ: I really think it was unnecessary for them to add the "ironically" part.

Marketing Agent: You be grateful. I had to sell my children for them not to do it on A Scanner Darkly.
