I'm glad to say that I've finally got around to reading the first issue. It took me a while to get around to, because 1) I wanted to finish Preacher first, and 2) Scott Pilgrim #1 was nearly impossible to find for the longest time, even though all of the Scott Pilgrim issues are published in my own damn city!
Anyway, I'm glad to say it was worth the wait. A lot of video game parodies are coming into focus and it'll be interesting to see how they come through in the movie. Still not entirely sure what's up with Ramona's trips through subspace/Dreamland or her head glowing, ditto for Scott's sudden ability to perform fighting moves right out of Dragonball Z. But whatever, we'll run with it.
I'm seeing quite a few similarities between "Scott Pilgrim" and "Spaced," which means that Edgar Wright should have no problem with the material. What I know of the casting appears dead-on, though it took me a while to see Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim. Of course, he appeared in full costume and make-up in one of the video logs and that allayed my fears considerably. It's amazing how well Wright has been able to take the characters' appearances in the comic and make them work in real life. Still, Cera's been stuck in a bit of a rut lately, essentially playing the same character over and over again. If he does that with Scott Pilgrim, he's going to sink the role and bring the movie down with it.
So, now I'm off to read Issue #2, if I can find a copy of the damn thing. Seriously, Powell's, you're the biggest independent bookstore in the world and you have copies of every Scott Pilgrim issue except
#1 and #2?!
