Tell me about it - I went into that one expecting to return to gleeful escapism, but was pretty shocked. I imagine your experience was the same! It was interesting though, wouldn't you say? Should set up a dramatic conclusion.... hopefully some of the humour will return too... ;)

Bump.

I'm glad to say that I've finally got around to reading the first issue. It took me a while to get around to, because 1) I wanted to finish Preacher first, and 2) Scott Pilgrim #1 was nearly impossible to find for the longest time, even though all of the Scott Pilgrim issues are published in my own damn city!

Anyway, I'm glad to say it was worth the wait. A lot of video game parodies are coming into focus and it'll be interesting to see how they come through in the movie. Still not entirely sure what's up with Ramona's trips through subspace/Dreamland or her head glowing, ditto for Scott's sudden ability to perform fighting moves right out of Dragonball Z. But whatever, we'll run with it.

I'm seeing quite a few similarities between "Scott Pilgrim" and "Spaced," which means that Edgar Wright should have no problem with the material. What I know of the casting appears dead-on, though it took me a while to see Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim. Of course, he appeared in full costume and make-up in one of the video logs and that allayed my fears considerably. It's amazing how well Wright has been able to take the characters' appearances in the comic and make them work in real life. Still, Cera's been stuck in a bit of a rut lately, essentially playing the same character over and over again. If he does that with Scott Pilgrim, he's going to sink the role and bring the movie down with it.

So, now I'm off to read Issue #2, if I can find a copy of the damn thing. Seriously, Powell's, you're the biggest independent bookstore in the world and you have copies of every Scott Pilgrim issue except #1 and #2?! :x

It's a popular book, maybe more popular than the publisher realized. I know they can be pretty hard to come by.

How about your local library?

A quick question for our Toronto members: Is there really such a place as Honest Ed's? If so, what exactly makes it such an attack on sanity?

(Volume 3, in case anyone was wondering.)

There is indeed, although I must admit I have never once stepped foot in there (the store is a little out of the way). It's basically a very cheap (albeit large) discount store and I usually try to avoid those.

I think what makes the place so insane is the sheer amount of stuff there is to buy, most of which is pretty tacky. As well as the gaudy decor of the interior:

All of the locations in Scott Pilgrim exist in real life. Such as:

Sneaky Dee's
Image

Lee's Palace
Image

Toronto Reference Library

So in most cases if you see a reference to a certain location, it probably does exist. As well, although I don't remember if it was stated specifically, Scott, Wallace, Stephen and Julie all seemed to have gone to school at the University of Toronto judging by one scene of them walking on it's campus lawn.

I haven't read Scott Pilgrim (going to eventually) but I instantly understood why Honest Ed's was called "an attack on sanity" by looking at those pictures. ^ I visit Canada fairly often and I definitely want to check that place out the next time I go to Toronto.

If you're going to visit Toronto in the near future, you should definitely do it after you've read Scott Pilgrim.

Good point. I'll be sure to do that. :)

First enhanced image still from the movie (the original was posted on Edgar Wright's sight albeit at an awkward angle):

Hopefully a trailer is soon to follow.

 Mary Elizabeth Winstead just....looks....wow. THE most gorgeous woman on the planet, I am thoroughly convinced of it.

I cannot wait to see this movie.

All this awesomeness and we still don't have a solid release date. What the hell, Edgar?

I was thinking it would be sometime in March 2010.

In the meantime, I thought I'd post some fairly old photos of the cast. I said it before but the casting for this movie has been most excellent. I can't remember the last time I saw a cast that just felt so right:

I think I'm looking forward to seeing Routh as Todd most of all. I've never seen him to comedy.

I think one concern about this movie is that people may become sick of Michael Cera, especially by the time Youth In Revolt comes out.

He had a comedic role in Zack and Miri. Maybe it's just because he was playing off of Justin Long, but I personally thought Routh was very funny.

Oh, that fatigue has already set in. The trick will be for Cera to find roles that will gradually phase him out of the character he's been playing since day one and into something new. From what I've seen of Youth in Revolt, I think that movie will help do the trick. Ditto for Scott Pilgrim.

Speaking of which, Bryan Lee O'Malley himself tweeted -- and I quote -- "Stop not being sure about Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim. Your being unsure is a bad move. You'll feel like an idiot next year."

Also, does anyone know when the hell volume 6 is coming out?

I don't know. I read the first three volumes and I'm going to get the next two sometime before I die. Is the 6th one the final volume?

And if it is, do the filmmakers have preexisting knowledge of the story? How are they making the movie?

I think O'Malley worked on the script, or at least helped work on it. I remember reading once that a line from one of the earlier books actually came from the script from the movie. But I would imagine the movie will ultimately be its own beast and will probably end on a different note than the books will. I think O'Malley is trying to get the last book done by the time the movie is out.

Yep.

If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure that only the first two volumes had been released while the movie was being written. O'Malley was pitching the storylines for volumes 3 and 4 in the writer's room.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry. I've read all five volumes and I'm aware of the hints and the backstory constantly being dropped. I very much doubt that O'Malley would have started this -- let alone gotten so far successfully -- without having at least a broad outline of the entire series from the get-go.

I was in Toronto recently, and went to quite a few of those locations (saw a friend's band from New Zealand play at Lee's Palace, ate at Sneaky's...). Toronto has an extremely active film-life, usually doubling as NYC, so it'll be good to see Hogtown playing itself for a change!

So it seems Scott Pilgrim Versus The World is coming in August:

Finally! Somehow, a late summer release just feels right for this movie. I wonder what it's up against. Let's see...

"Eat, Pray, Love." Sounds like all this one has going for it is a decent cast.

A movie called "Ramona and Beezus" about Ramona Quimby. An amusing coincidence, but I doubt that the audience of one will confuse it for the other.

Sequels to Friday the 13th and Resident Evil are also due at around that time. *yawn*

I'm also seeing a romantic comedy called "Baster" and some Gerard Butler/Paul Bettany action picture called "Priest." The former should be no problem, but the latter is an unknown quantity.

And there's also... oh, shit. Scott Pilgrim is being released opposite The Expendables.

...Well, it actually looks like a pretty good release window for Scott Pilgrim, except for the direct competition against the cinematic concentration of awesome that is going to be The Expendables.

Side note: Would anyone be at all surprised to see Scott Pilgrim in a lightsaber duel with Gideon during Volume 6? I know I wouldn't.

Still so far, far away... :|

Jason Reitman saw some early footage of the movie and seemed impressed:

Quote:
"In London, Edgar Wright showed me 30min of Scott Pilgrim. While sworn to secrecy (so much, surprised blood wasn't demanded) I will say this: It is a game changer for Edgar and the genre. It moves the speed of light and carries more unadulterated joy than Ive seen in recent cinema. [Scott Pilgrim] does what everyone our age has been dreaming about: achieves the first all encompassing film of the joystick generation.I'm in awe of the sheer control in the filmmaking. It feels like a Matrix for love and how willing we are to fight for it. If I had a movie coming out next year, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it. Hats off my friend. Can't get it out of my head."

So now that we have a release date let's see a trailer Edgar.
