That's right kids, in two years you'll be able to watch another spiderman origin film. Won't that be fun?

If you have been following the news for Spiderman 4, Raimi had been fighting with Sony over who would be Spidey's villain in the sequel, well it looks like Sony has told Sam Raimi to fuck off and have decided to reboot the entire franchise. Personally I think this is almost as dumb as Fox trying to reboot Fantastic 4. I mean does anyone else want another origin story, especially to one that we already know? And as much as I finally admit that Spiderman 3 was a bad film (I spent many years in denial) I was optimistic over Sam Raimi's handeling for the Spiderman 4.

having thought about it for a bit, I realize that a reboot doesn't necessarily mean they have to do a origin film. Much like 2008's The Incredible Hulk (which was shit) the new Spiderman film could easily have a 5 minute recap on how Parker becomes Spiderman and then the film could focus on a Spiderman, while in his early years, being spiderman and not have to go through his awkward years in highschool (beacuse that would be lame)

But the question still stands. Who would you get to play Parker? It's just kind of hard seeing anyone else besides Toby McGuire play him

Would we have to watch another film where Spiderman fights the Green Goblin?

I just don't think the Spiderman franchise needs a reboot and while it does suck that Raimi isn't a part of the franchise anymore, Sony could have easily just hired another director to continue it, instead of starting all over.

To me, this is the equivalent of them saying that they're going to reboot Star Wars instead of doing Episode III because the prequels were bad or because they couldn't decide where the final duel should take place.

You've got to be fucking kidding.
Hollywood's brain has run completely dry.

In a year, we're going to wake up to headlines of "IRON MAN REBOOT UNDERWAY."

For fuck's sake.

Point 1) The Incredible Hulk proved that rebooting a franchise too soon can only hurt the final product, especially on the bottom line.

Point 2) Sam Raimi was more or less given free reign on the first two Spider-Man movies as well as Drag Me to Hell. He was forced by Marvel and Sony to include several story points in Spider-Man 3. The former three movies were awesome. The latter movie suffered.

Point 3) Tobey Maguire is getting too old for the role, J.K. Simmons is moving on to several different other projects and did anyone really like Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane?

Conclusion: Sony is running this franchise into the ground. Sam Raimi evidently decided that abandoning the franchise to its fate was better than staying on to pump out bilge while the ship sinks. The next Spider-Man movie -- if it happens at all -- will be likely be the franchise's last. In a few years, the rights for the character will revert to Marvel and Disney, who will attempt yet another franchise reboot in a decade or two.

As for why they're rebooting, let's face facts: Maguire and Dunst simply will not come aboard this project without Raimi. Sony is too chicken to continue the franchise without its director or its stars and it's easy to see why. After all, the last time something like this happened, Tim Burton bowed out to be replaced by Joel Schumacher, Val Kilmer replaced Michael Keaton, and the remains of that Batman franchise have only just stopped smoking.

You do realize that I'm probably not going to come back to this thread for the sole purpose of avoiding that image, right?

I... don't know how to feel about this. On one hand, goodbye Tobey. He was good but now he is old and well, It could be nice to see another actor on the role. Also, we could get a better interpretation of Venom, who was fucking awful. *

On the other hand... we could get another interpretation of Doc. Octopus, who was FUCKING GREAT.

* The guy that played Venom could have done a good Peter Parker, don't know about Spiderman.

Btw, Simmons could still be on this project.

Well said.

When a studio announces a reboot, it implies that they feel a franchise cannot be saved and have to start from scratch. Look at the Batman franchise pre-Begins, Batman and Robin is notorious for not only being one of the worst comic book films of all time, but it manage to destroy any interest in a batman film for almost a decade. In that situation, a reboot is completely necessary.

The problem is is that so many studios are looking at Batman Begins and going, "oh look they rebooted this franchise and made a shit load of money in the process. WE SHOULD DO THE SAME THING." As bad as Spider-man 3 was, it was no where near as bad as Batman and Robin. Sony could have easily worked with Raimi on Spiderman 4, and if that movie was good, the fans would have easily forgiven Raimi for Spiderman 3.

I've heard this before, and I really can't see Topher Grace as Peter Parker.

Also Sony best bring J.K. Simmons back, or else there's no point in even making another spiderman film.

From IGN
Quote:
Here is Sony's official statement on the reboot: "Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager dealing with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises. The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

So it's official, we will be seeing either an origin story, or a movie based more on Ultimate Spiderman where all of the events that happen to Spiderman (fight with Green goblin and Venom) now happens to him when he's in high school.

On the one hand I'm happy, I never really cared for Dunst at all in this franchise so I'm happy there will be a new Mary Jane. On the other hand, this is fucking stupid. They're rebooting a franchise that doesn't need rebooting. Everyone knows how Peter Parker became Spider-Man and his highschool years are so completely uninteresting. It seems like they're going to be targeting the Twilight crowd with this now rather than make a movie for everybody. Lame.

The Spider-man films were AWESOME. Three was only awesome because it was so bizarrely bad.
HOWEVER... I too was really looking forward to 4. Telling Sam Raimi to fuck off is a huge mistake... as he is one of the reasons the series was so great in the first place. Typical Fox.

However, the only good thing that might come out of this is that Raimi now has time to make more horror films if he so chooses. Drag Me to Hell was perhaps by best theater experience of 2009. I hope that this frees up his schedule and lets him return to the genre he began in once again!

Also... who the hell shat that, WJK? The Goatse guy?

To be honest, I'm hoping that they skip the origin story and go straight to the webslinging. That scenario may be improbable but it's not impossible. Don't believe me? There's a TV show called "Spectacular Spider-Man" that doesn't tell the origin story until the end of the first season. Give that a watch sometime.
