Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Chris Evans will star as Captain America and Sebastian Stan will portray Cap's sidekick Bucky in the studio's highly anticipated movie "The First Avenger: Captain America," directed by Joe Johnston from a script penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce "The First Avenger: Captain America." Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, Stratton Leopold and Louis D'Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

"The First Avenger: Captain America" will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Chris Evans will next star in Sylvain White's "The Losers." He will also star in Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World." He recently wrapped production on "Puncture" and he will soon start production on "What's Your Number." Evans' previous credits include starring as Johnny Storm in the "Fantastic Four" films, Danny Boyle's "Sunshine" and David Ayer's "Street Kings."

Sebastian Stan can currently be seen in "Hot Tub Time Machine," and will appear in "The Apparition" as well as Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan," both slated for 2010. His previous credits include roles on the NBC drama "Kings" and CW's "Gossip Girl."

In addition to "The First Avenger: Captain America," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, "Iron Man 2," starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010; "Thor" on May 6, 2011; and "The Avengers" on May 4, 2012.

Not sure I'm happy about the choice...

I thougt he had said something about not wanting to be in it because he was already in Fantastic Four.

I don't really mind the choice. Chris Evans is a very likable actor, and even in shitty movies he tends to be the only good thing about it (see F4). However i guess when I think about Captain America, I think of someone that screams AMERICA!!!! I don't think Chris Evans is that person though.

Well, Evans is a better choice than who was rumoured to be up for the part:

Edit*, had an apostrophe where I didn't need one.

Yeah it kinda worries me about the film when Jim (because who cares about his real name amirite?) was being seriously considered for this role.

Krasinski would have been amazing as Steve Rogers; he as the man displaced in time would have been heartbreaking. However, I am less confident in his ability to pull off the battlefield leader part of the role.

It's all academic now, I suppose, but he was an interesting choice. I'm not crazy about Chris Evans, but considering the list of made-for-TV pretty-boys I saw at Ain't It Cool, it could be a lot worse.

Hugo Weaving as Red Skull seems like kind of a lazy choice.

The screenwriters only previous credits are The Chronicles of Narnia and some other movie I've never seen.

Ugh. Is Joe Johnston a decent director, at least? Did anyone see Wolfman?

^ Joe Johnson came onto wolfman 3 weeks before shooting because the original director dropped out when shooting was about to start

Yeah, I read a little about the problems they had. Is he a decent director, though? I don't think I've seen anything he's done.

I'll go look.

Okay, I have seen Hidalgo. That was okay.

and i thought it was pretty well directed.

he also directed JP3, which wasn't bad imho, and he was hand picked by Spielberg who was a bit of a mentor to him, and he worked at ilm, so he knows VFX i think he'll be good.

I guess I'll end up seeing it, but I've always thought that the concept and the superhero himself are simply ridiculous and phony, then again one has to understand "the purpose" of comics back in the US of the 40's.

As I said on a topic a looooong time ago, the comedian feels more real as a superhero that represents the US, no offense to anyone really, but I'd rather take our watchmen fellow than some corny ideal who is now "dead", that's "dead" because we know how Marvel is :|

On a good note, I like Chris Evans, he is a good actor who usually tends to choose his movies right, and apart from that, the guy is funny and he can be serious when he wants to.

Besides, YOU HAVE to love the guy, he is playing Jensen from The Losers :D !

Well I don't really think it's fair to compare the two characters, especially since they represent completely different sides of America.

Well, I always thought that Captain America, despise the name, represented ideals that could apply to every one, not only north americans, and for certain not only that country.

It isn't also fair to even dare to compare "Cloudy..." with "Up", but such are the people...

In all seriousness ? of course it isn't fair, but you have to admit that Cap is too much of an idea and too little of a character, even worse when the idea is an annoying one.

He directed the Rocketeer and October Sky, both of which are great movies.

Oh and he did Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Jumanji. Fuck yeah.

I doubt he cares anymore since they're going to reboot the Fantastic Four.
