I took it as he doesn't care because he's been desensitized by so many of the military's fuck ups. Which is kind of how I feel about it.

By the way, do I have this wrong, or do the rules of engagement call for only firing when fired upon? Maybe that was just in Black Hawk Down :?

It makes sense to me, though...

you're all right. i don't care, the military DOES fuck up a lot, and i did say that "shit happens". but penultimately, i do not give any sort of justification for what they did, and at the same time i still don't care. yeah, the soldiers made a mistake, and it was a nasty one. also you can tell from the cameras that jack shit can't be seen. but they still did it.

This is crazy, and I hope someone corrects me, but I remember that in "Ghosts Of Abu Ghraib" (excellent documentary), one of the soldiers that was interviewed said that he once asked his superior officers about the rules of engagement, if I remember correctly, the interviewed soldier mentioned how the officers looked puzzled and told him that there were no rules of engagement.

There's a fine line between war and mass murder isn't there?

i thought rules of engagement determined what kind of weapons were allowed. such as after WWI, nobody was to ever use mustard gas, as it was deemed "inhumane."

That is true.
In that case, maybe that's how we should put down our pets, animals, and livestock. And hell, instead of pulling the plug on Grandma... ;)

There's a thing called the internet. Just go to his site. I'm sure the full episode's up by now. It's the second half of the show, btw.

I can't do the man's words justice.

Well, I fixed the spelling in my post but I can never fix it in your quote.

Damndamndamndamndamndamn

It's the keyboard, not me. Seriously.

I'm not sure what to make of that interview. I like Colbert, but he's trying to justify the soldier's actions too much. I don't agree with most of his argument.

At the same time, I agreed that the wikileaks dude had his own bullshit agenda for releasing the video.

But like I said, Colbert seems to be justifying the events, and I don't think they're justifiable.

I am hoping, REALLY hoping that Colbert was assuming another role to interview Julian Assange, I am hoping, REALLY hoping that this role encompassed a lot of ideas that support the war efforts in Iraq, I am hoping, REALLY hoping that somehow this was a way to challenge Julian Assange's ideals.

I am hoping, REALLY hoping that Colbert is not an imbecile.

Colbert was right on the manipulation that Assange did to the video, but I wouldn't believe the guy had an agenda since all that Colbert was doing was discrediting Assange by the end of the video, classic Bill O'Reilly dirty tactics. I believe that if the latter is guilty of anything is about not knowing shit about how to defend your point.

It bothered me. Colbert wasn't making enough jokes for me to believe that it was a role. Both were making shitty arguments left and right.

It was an ugly interview, and I'm a little upset with Colbert. He's always been against the war, and this seemed like the complete opposite. I understand that he supports the troops, as do I, but his attitude in the video was vastly different from his usual character, and certainly from what I've come to believe as his true self.

He truly sounded like a real right wing pundit.

I'm confused by it.
