This might be a long post. I was just going to touch upon a few points but since the season is almost over here is my overall feelings of the season as a whole.

Do I like it when characters mysteriously and very frequently bump into each other ? not really, but you seem to have A LOT of trouble with this particular issue
My problem with it is every time they bring an old character back or when characters have these special connections it seems like a big wink to the audience. I find these encounters are more often than not a distraction, even though I was initially on board when Jack first met Locke (something which really hasn't amounted to anything yet). At their worst they're predictable (such as Alex being Ben's student). As well, the show is bringing back characters I have no interest it. Characters like Artz, Minkowski, Mikhail, etc. Supposedly the actor who played Mr Eko was interested in making an appearance yet its been reported that he is not being brought back. That the other guys made the cut and he didn't is annoying to me.
I've been trying to figure out why I didn't like the episode as much as everyone else, and I think I finally know the reason. It's why I haven't liked the entire season, despite a few excellent episodes. I really don't care about the flash sideways. At all. And since "Happily Ever After" is pretty much devoted to the concept, I think I was destined to not like it
We've been following these characters for six seasons now. I feel like we know them as well as we can possibly know them. But the flash sideways are forcing us to get to know these characters again. At this point in the game I don't know if I want to. And I find a lot of these story lines have had nowhere to go. Which is why I think the last episode suffered because of it.
I thought Desmond had the perfect story arc, which came to a satisfying conclusion at the end of season 4. So watching him try to connect with Penny again just doesn't carry any weight for me, especially when the writing is as sloppy as it is (he goes to the stadium, at night, and she doesn't question what he's doing there, or who he is, or how he knows her? I would have liked to have seen him work for it a bit).
The season in a way reminds me of seasons 3 and 5, my least favourite seasons. In these seasons the survivors are separated from one another for long stretches of episodes, and that's something that I think always hurts the story. Because very little seems to be happening on either side. Jack and co are
still at the beach trying to figure out what they should do (although, with "The Package" hopefully there will be some actual momentum), and Sawyer and co are sitting around doing....what exactly? Seeing as how there is supposed to be a war coming, both groups seem to be stuck in one place. With only 5 episodes left I hope we see some actual movement to the plot.
As for the episode:
- I continue to hate Mrs Hawking. I have never liked her as a character and I hate the actress's performance. I think I might have said this before but she acts like she should be in a Disney movie. Her acting clashes with the other actors whose performances are mostly grounded in reality.
- One problem with the episode I had is that while it seems like a lot is happening, there really isn't. Desmond's conversations with Charlie all amount to the same thing (and I hope Charlie is arrested for almost getting themselves killed). And much of the episode consists of Desmond going from one location to another, meeting our favourite characters, and talking to them about love. This does not make for an exciting episode, in my mind.
- Daniel is a character we've known for two seasons. He died at the hands of his own mother on the island. So why did his return feel so unemotional and clumsy to me? I think this quote, from another forum broke it down best:
Quote:
Then you have Daniel walking up to him afterwards. Hey, I saw you asked to see that list. That means you must be having the same visions I'm having. I'm in love with a red head. I think I blew up an atomic bomb in another life. Go find my half sister
One last note, but I've realized something that is a bit disappointing. I think I enjoy the show mostly for its mystery. I like the characters but it's the twists and turns that have kept me so involved with the show. Now that we are getting some answers, I find them to be either unremarkable or poorly executed. Which means all that is left is the characters. And while I do love these characters, I still like a bit of action, a bit of mystery. A show like The Wire, for example (which you should all check out by the way) is all about the characters. But those characters are much better fleshed out than those on Lost, and the dialogue is much better. It might not be fair to compare the two as they are both so different, but the writing one The Wire is just more sophisticated than that of Lost.
I still have hope that I'll enjoy the rest of the season. I'm trying to not let my expectations get in the way of my enjoyment but it's not easy. I've been watching since the first episode, on the first night it aired (which was a Saturday if you can believe it). I'll never regret watching the show, but I do hope the writers still have some tricks up their sleeves for the finale.
