...for some at least

I've said it again, this is a cool forum, and I want to discuss cool topics in it.

For those who do not know, I am studying psychology, I transfered to another university because my previous alma mater was a pain in the ass, now that I am in this new school, I am in a class called "Personality Psychology I".

In this class there is a professor of mine which is a hardcore psychoanalist (sp), he loves Mr. Sigmund Freud and Mr. Jacques Lacan, while I pretty much feel annoyed by both, because of this we both butt-head quite a lot in class, with me supporting the more scientific approach to psychology.

I thought this was a really good topic of discussion and I wanted to share it with you, it won't be familiar to everyone, but I thought I should give it a shot.

For more information, try these links http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoanalysis and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behaviorism

I just finished taking Psychology 101, but I don't know how much of the basic things I learned I actually retained so I'm not sure I could give much input.

How about you start with your general argument for the scientific method of psychology over the other one?

I did learn these. Just for the record.

Somehow I sensed I would have to before anyone else :(

Basically, I think that psychoanalysis has too many holes to be considered as an adequate way to make conclussions on human behavior. Freud's ideas were based out of his own subjective interpretation of several pathological cases he had treated himself, yet, there is no proof of anything he ever said, his ideas are accepted because for some it "makes sense".

Personally, I like to side with the people who prove or disprove what they say, I don't particularly feel that the behaviorist theory is "completely right" about everything, but it is one of the theories that has described human behavior in the most accurate way, they prove what they say through empyrical contrast, they make theories and base their knowledge on what can be proven or disproven, not on what someone can say and how smart he can sound while saying it.

I don't think I'm well informed enough to continue this discussion but I think I agree with you.

By the way, here's the real ultimate showdown.

Frankly I'm going to start using the verb "butt-head" more often in conversation.

Anyway, I'm not understanding the topic.
