Naturally, Watchmen made the list. In fact, I had so many stories to tell and so many thoughts to put down that I had to make a two-parter of it.

This one is about WCM.Com.

This one is about the movie itself.

Enjoy!

Anyway, very good entries. I especially liked the one about this site. Very interesting. Keep up the good work.

I agree with most of your points about the movie, although I'm much less lenient. But I don't think criticizing this cast is being nitpicky at all. A better Watchmen movie could be made with a better cast. A lot of my dislike of the theatrical cut came from my dislike of the cast.

Quote:
By and large, the casting is wonderful. Jackie Earle Haley turns in an absolutely flawless Rorschach

I'll also have to disagree with this point. His performance is one that I was initially pleased with, but have grown to dislike. I feel his performance was not as inspired as it could have been, and I think it's missing a lot of the dark humour that makes Rorschach such a great character.

Quote:
Patrick Wilson got the voice and mannerisms of Dan Dreiberg down pat, but he just didn’t quite gel in the role for me.

When I reviewed the movie after seeing it for the first time I said Wilson was adequate as Dan. I've only seen the movie once but his role in this movie doesn't really stand out in my mind. The thing is I can't think of another actor who would nail the role.

Quote:
For example, the original Sally Jupiter seems to have resigned herself to growing old and spends most of Chapter 2 in bed. When we meet Sally in the movie, she’s made up, dressed nice and acting as if she were trying to hold onto her youth. It’s a valid approach to the character, but Gugino doesn’t quite sell it. Meanwhile, Laurie Juspeczyk showed a much wider emotional range in the comic than Laurie Jupiter did in the movie. I think Akerman was trying to make Laurie more stoic, which — again — is a valid approach to the character that she just can’t seem to pull off.

I agree with this point in particular. Both actresses had different takes on the characters than I had in my head (and the same goes for Haley as Rorschach), but both were just miscast. I actually think Gugino would have made for a better Laurie than Akerman. It almost makes me wish Snyder had just used older actors for these roles and just used CGI to make the actors look younger. In fact, since most of the actors are wearing masks in the flashback scenes I think they could have got away with it.

As far as the cast is concerned I think Jeffery Dean Morgan is the only one who I'd still want in this movie.

I hate grizzly voiced rorschach. JEH's performance isn't the picture I got at all from the comics.

You really didn't imagine Rorschach as having a gravelly voice when reading the book?

I know I didn't. Which is why I think Haley's take on the character is pretty unimaginative. But again, he had a different take on the character than I had.

Dude, it's still his birthday in your timezone! Don't be so mean!
Anywho, I'm wary of reassessing movies over time without seeing them again. Granted, I went from loving Frost/Nixon to hating it without seeing it again, but an actor's performance is something that can easily be warped by memory.

This is what I originally had to say about Haley in my review of the movie:

Quote:
Jackie Earl Haley - B+. I don't know if he was born to play this role, something I think a lot of people on this forum probably feel. Yet there is a sense that there was total commitment to the role. Still hated his voice, however.

I think at the time I was mostly positive about him, but keep in mind I had just come back from watching the movie. I still feel like he was totally committed to the role, I just don't think he was that good and I don't think I would have cast him if given the opportunity.

1) My actual birthday isn't until this Sunday. The retrospective will end then.
2) I did in fact re-watch all of the entries in my retrospective. The way it works is that I write a first draft from memory and then re-watch the movie, pausing to tweak the post as I go.
3) I'm curious, t3cii, are there any particular bits of dark humor from the text that you think are missing? Maybe I'm due to re-read the GN again, but the only one that comes to my mind is the running gag in which he keeps breaking into Dan's house and steals his food.
4) I was completely expecting some level of disagreement on at least one of my retrospective entries. In fact, I encourage it.

AYB was talking about Jackie Earle Haley. It was JEH's birthday just recently.

Ah. Yes, that's right.

Well, then I concede AYB's point.

Not at all. He's meant to be kind of monotone. I imagined something like Kevin Spacey's voice.

"Dark" humour might not have been the right word for it but it has more to do with Haley's delivery. In the book Rorschach makes the joke about "human bean juice". It makes it into the movie but if I remember correctly Haley doesn't add the little laugh at the end. He plays him so serious, so deadpan that it doesn't sound like he's making these little jokes or puns at all (he makes quite a few in his visits to Happy Harry and Moloch). It's funny that a lot of the humour in the book comes from a character most see as being the most serious.

I can see that. I tend to hear Kevin Bacon's voice when reading the book in my head. He has a low, sort of grumbly voice, but there's some humour in his tone too. I also sometimes think of Steven Wright voice, which is very flat and monotone and burned out.
