We already have a thread here for guilty pleasures, things that you love despite the fact that everyone else seems to hate them. Well, here's a thread to discuss/rant about pop culture phenomena that you're bored with, tired of and pissed at, despite the fact that they remain popular.

For me, No. 1 is Sarah Silverman. That girl is everywhere lately. There are so many people and magazines claiming that she's the funniest comic out there. Not even close. Jon Stewart and any one of his correspondents are funnier than she is. And let's not forget the greats, like George Carlin and Robin Williams. Hell, I'd say that Carlos Mencia -- a criminally underrated comic, in my estimation -- is funnier than Silverman.

Her whole gimmick is that she has an angel face and a dirty mouth. As if a half-hour show about licking a dog's asshole (exact quote from several commercials for Silverman's program) is made any funnier by the fact that Silverman is kinda cute. She's not funny, she has nothing of any value to say, screw her.

Then there's Napoleon Dynamite. I've seen the commercials, I've seen the merchandise and everyone seems to love this frakking movie. Me, I couldn't sit through fifteen minutes of it. The movie completely bored me and I couldn't find anything that resembled a compelling narrative.

And YouTube. Don't get me wrong, I think YouTube is great for music videos, movie trailers, TV shows and movies... you know, the stuff that YouTube technically shouldn't be used for due to "copyright laws." But could someone please explain to me what's so funny about this, or why this clip has nearly a million views? And why do so many people put the same damn clip up?

That's about all I can think of at the moment. Feel free to disagree with me, but I'd rather hear what movies, TV shows, music genres or celebrities you're completely fed up with. Oh, and they have to be things that everyone else seems to love, so Tom Cruise, Paris Hilton, et al. don't count.

Well, I like Sarah Silverman. She is overrated, but I like her brand of humor. But I also like fart jokes and laugh whenever anyone says "duty."

I also like Napoleon Dynamite, but I can see why some would hate it. I couldn't sit through 20 minutes of Rushmore, and almost everyone I know raves about that movie being the best.

But Mencia? Here's where I disagree. I personally don't like him and think he is unfunny. All he does is do old tired sterotype jokes and then he yells and fires up the audiance afeter every lame punchline by screaming "Am I right, people!!" So they all cheer like labotomized lemmings (how's that phrase, Vynson? ;) )

Now I really like stand-up comedian Dane Cook, but I also know many people who absolutely cannot stand him.

Taste is a very personal thing.

What would be on my list of pop culture crap? Any dating reality show.

I find very few comedians today to be funny. They try to be edgy, but have very little substance. There is a video of Ricky Gervais interviewing Larry David, and Gervais said he was in a night club where all the acts had pretty much the same routine. Their acts involved them being children of immigrant parents who of course did not want them to become a comedian. And everyone of them had the same catch prase, "What the fuck?", followed by a shoulder shrug.

I agree about Silverman. Her whole schtick is pretty much, mildy attractive girl who tells dirty jokes. Most of which are not that funny to begin with.

Does the continuing existence of homo sapiens qualify as "pop culture phenomenon"? What would you call it?

I watched that Sarah Silverman show for the first time a few weeks ago, and sat for twenty-something minutes in silent anticipation. Emphasis on silent. No laughter emanated from my oral cavity, nor any other cavity of which I am currently in posession.

Dane Cook is so incredibly not funny. He reminds me of that one dude in every social circle, the one with too much natural energy that still feels like he needs to drink Mountain Dew*, and wants to be the center of attention EVERY FUCKING SECOND.

IMHO, of course.

*For younger members of Watchmenmovie.com, Mountain Dew is what we used to drink for day-glo hyper-spastic energy before we had "Energy Drinks".

Basically, I'm tired of pop culture replacing journalism. I don't mind pop culture, mind you. I mind that the package it comes in has replaced reality in the public perception.

I hate that CNN is more interested in Paris' panties than the war in Iraq.
I hate the fact that, frankly, most Americans agree with CNN on this triage of issues.

I don't care what religion Tom Cruise embraces or what kind of trouble Robert Downey, Jr. or Mel Gibson have in their personal lives. I really don't care. My relationship with them goes no further than their work. When I go into a restaurant, I don't check to make sure the chef's political and religious views align with my own. I don't care. I just want my steak rare.

This destructive obsession with celebrity is a distraction from the important things going on in the world.

On comedians...
Jon Stewart is the best thing on TV. His "fake" news has more truth than any "real" news show. And the beating he delivered to the left and the right on CNN's Crossfire was absolutely brilliant. Youtube it if you haven't seen it.
I like Ron White.
I find Sarah Silverman tacky and boring. Tacky I can forgive in the service of humor, but boredom? Never.

What I find yucky...

The banality of MTV and likewise programming. The so-called "reality" programming and "Pimp my (insert unimportant material good here)" gets my goat.

What I do like...

Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, The Simpsons and most shows on the History Channel- International (yes, even the UFO specials- mind candy, but stimulating... :geek: )

I'm from Mexico, so I guess the pop culture is a little different. I'm really freaking sick and tired of reggaeton. All the songs are basically the same.

I also don't understand the appeal of RBD, I'm surprised those guys have not disappeared off the face of the earth. Televisa (a mexican communications network) just keeps them alive because they know that as soon as they stop a little publicity for them, their fame would die down substantially.

And I hate, hate most if not all of mexican soap operas and TV shows. It's always the same plots, always the same jokes, always the same actors. I would appreciate it if one of these shows was at least good, style-wise, but that's the problem, none of them are.

urgh i lived in spain so it was over there a little too. everytime you heard "boooom pitpit boooom pitpit boooom"
(i.e. that reggaeton beat) you knew there was a car 500 yards away with five guys in without shirts looking for chicks. its like their mating call.

i really have grown to hate family guy, and to a degree it was south park that ruined it for me.

my girlfriend hates little britain whereas i would call it a god-send in comparison to catherine tate. another unfunny woman to put in a bag with silverman and throw it in the river.

Well, for starters. . .Britney Spears. She bombed at the VMA'S, she's always crashing into people's cars yet hasn't done in any jailtime. She is so overrated. Lindsay Lohan. Terrible actress. Overrated. Paris Hilton. If I would have done what Paris has i'd probably still be in jail...not living at my two story home with swimming pools, tennis courts, friends over all the time home jail. I can't stand reality shows. They're everywhere. It seems like anyone and everyone is coming out with a reality show these days. The ones that really get to me are the ones i've seen on VH1 and MTV. I also hate the fact that Hollywood doesn't seem to be as original as it used to be. Where have all the original talent gone? It seems that every movie made before 1990 has, is, or will be re-made soon. Some movies should stay as they were. I read somewhere that remakesof Casablanca and It's a wonderful life are being planned out. That enfuriates me! Movies such as those are classics! They shouldn't be re-made with people such as Justin Timberlake and Lindsay Lohan playing the lead! Also, I can't stand how rappers act hardthey go around talking their shit, starting rivalries, talking about how their from the streets and rap about how many women they've slept with. Then, you see them host Pimp my Ride. Star in Fred Clause. Make D-list movies. I just can't stand mediocre rappers becoming mediocre actors

I don't care about K-fed's EX and her bajingo saying "HI" to the world.
And Lindsay Lohan can go parent "TRAP" her self in a box with scorpions in it!
And Paris can jump off Paris's eiffel tower...

This is the news that makes me stick salty lemons in my eyes...

Please someone take them away.
