No he said he thinks hipsters only follow trends, but according to their own logic they should be reading things that aren't trendy.

I agreed said that's the dichotomy of hipsters... they follow the trends but act like it's not a trend.

Hence my statement of Hipsters readng Twilight and liking it "ironically" and yet they buy the shirts, read the books, see the movies etc.

And that's what I hate about hipsters. Like when it was cool to hate Lady Gga hipsters hated her, but now that she's popular they act like they've always liked her... so they can say they liked her before she was cool.

If that doesn't make sense to you be glad, that means you're still sane.

Yeah, none of this makes any sense to me, and frankly, this argument is kind of stupid. I agree with t3cii and Lil' Bernie on this. Hipster's just some sort of stupid umbrella term that defines people you don't like for, I don't know, liking the things you like? I don't really get it. At all.

The biggest crime of hipsters is making Brooklyn a very inarticulate individual when he talks about them ! That's how evil they are :o !

But it's not that hard to understand people, I'll give an example:

The Preacher TV show gets the green light, the first episode is aired, and the people who read the comic are satisfied with the outcome.

Then I go to a party...

...and somebody is talking about "Preacher", he is talking about Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon as if both were longlife friends while impressing everyone in the room, and the dialogue goes a little like this:

Feliciano: Have you read Ennis' run on Punisher ?

Hipster: No.

Feliciano: Have you read Ennis' run on Hellblazer ?

Hipster: No.

Feliciano: 303 ?

Hipster: No.

Feliciano: Crossed ?

Hipster: No.

Feliciano: ................ The Boys ?!!

Hipster: No.

*Dialogue ends*

You're so uppity about "hipsters", though.

It's better than tv.

Where did you get that idea?

Well, it's just that you seemed to specifically mention non Americans. Like "Maybe you don't have hipsters where you live, but in America, we do!". I don't much about Australia, but Canada isn't all that different to the U.S. While Canadians often like to think of themselves as being morally superior to Americans, we're still very influenced by American culture. My point is Canada (specifically Toronto and Montreal) are just as likely to have hipsters as any city in the U.S. And if you go by your rigid criteria, you'd find them in London, Paris, Germany, and other parts of the world.

Dr. Brooklyn wrote:
See? That's why we hate hipsters. They read thigns like Twilight because t's ironic to like something so popular, but then at the same time they hate things that are really popular.

Now I think you guys are just making stuff up. Have you seriously met someone who claimed to like Twilight, albeit ironically? Or are you making another assumption? It's funny you should bring up Twilight, since the forum's Twilight thread is basically a bunch of posts where you guys talk about how lame it is. You would think not liking it would be enough, but that thread is over a thousand posts long. It's so hipster to love to hate Twilight. :P

From the sounds of that scenario, it could also be a guy who is just really excited about something new he just discovered, even if he wasn't particularly well versed in it. I can talk about how great Alan Moore is, yet I haven't read anything of his besides Watchmen and the first League Of Extraordinary Gentleman. I'm by no means a Moore aficionado, but if asked to talk about Watchmen, one of the only comics of his I've read, I'd go off on how brilliant the book is, and probably gush about Moore himself. But if someone like that was just trying to impress people, you don't have to call them "hipster". The word "asshole" would suffice.

As far as the phenomenon of people claiming to like something before it was popular, this isn't anything new, and it isn't specific to hipsters. As dumb as this will sound, I think people like that are afraid to be seen as being a "newb". Basically, they like something, and enjoy being a part of a little cult of fans. Then, that thing that they enjoy becomes hugely popular, and all of a sudden everyone starts to love it. They then feel like that makes them less special, somehow. So they feel the need to tell people that they were into this band/tv show/book series before everyone else, just so they can appear to have not just jumped on the bandwagon like everyone else. It's dumb, and insecure, but it's something I've seen in regards to music, and comics, movies, etc.

This song parodies and defines the common Australian "Hipster" stereotype.

I think that defines the universal "hipster" stereotype, at least so far as I know.

Well it doesn't seem to match up with a lot of the stuff in this thread.

If the sin is conformity under a mask of ill-executed irony, why then this is a world of sinners, and few saints left to save them all from themselves.

I see what you're saying, I think what really gets me is how smug Hipsters are.

Like I'll admit the reason read the sin cty books is because I wanted to see the movie. I'm never going to go around telling people I was into the trend before it was cool.

And yet Hipsters act like they discovered "The Watchmen" (on purpose) etc. and that just irks me.

Also I think their "fashion" is... the snarky quotation marks pretty much explain that I don't like it myself.

Please post a picture of a hipster. I'd be interested in seeing what you think they look like.
