I definitely recommend it, I played it shortly after it came out and had a blast. There are Autobot and Decepticon campaigns, followed by multiplayer, it's pretty cool.

Good, I saw some videos and loved how the Transformers retained the original sounds as they transformed, that shit sounds amazingly cool no matter how old you are, so it does seem like it was made by fans of the original cartoons.

What worried me are the shooting segments, is it satisfying enough ? I've been almost conditioned to not like any game that doesn't have cover mechanics.

I can't rent it around here, it's okay, I'll check some youtube gameplay and see it for myself.

the lack of cover mechanics is a bit annoying but you can stand behind a corner and shoot pretty safely, but to be honest, the lack of cover mechanics is taken into account in the difficulty, and the fact that you can still hide behind stuff.
the story is pretty good though, it has stuff like starscream and megatron meeting each other for the first time and optimus becoming the leader of the autobots,
also cybertron looks awesome. lots of shiny metal and glowing liquid energon flowing around.

also it was so good, the people that made it were told to make the DOTM game instead of the people that made the ROTF game :D

well that would explain why the DOTM game didn't look so terrible.

I have this itch to write a transformers story where the remaining Decpticons realize that in order for any of their massive world-ending schemes to work, they need to eliminate the Autobots FIRST, not deal with them later.
Anyways, in a last ditch attempt to finish off the Autobots, the last of the Decepticons kidnap Sam (or somebody) to bait them into a massive trap.
It works, so well in fact that the new weapon they've fashioned from the scrap pieces of the transporter beam in DOTM and some mystery tech, sends Optimus flying, damaged, into another dimension.
Realizing that the "weapon" is more of a portal generator than anything else, a few decepticons follow Optimus into the portal, to destroy him for good

However the injured Optimus disguises himself as the closest thing he could reach...

a vehicle that could only be described as a massive, black,"tank"...

It might suck, but it sounds pretty cool for the sake of being cool.

It's verbatim for what batman says to Martian Manhunter in Justice League: The New Frontier.

I was having trouble between writing it as total implausibility and/or a fan made possibility.
plus I love that line ^^
