Just finished the book by Edgar Rice Burroughs... rich material, and written in an often blank style when it comes to the action that pervades it. Perfect stuff for a director (in this case Andrew Stanton of Wall-E fame) to stamp his thing all over.

Already cast, Mark Strong, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, and James Purefoy.

And don't forget Taylor "Gambit" Kitsch in the title role.

I admit that I haven't read the source material, but I have read a book called "The Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Never Made," which gives a very thorough run-down on the movie's troubled development. It seems that this movie's been in development for so long that it was very nearly the first feature-length animated film in history. Can you imagine how the history of movies might have been different if this film launched before Snow White?

What really thrills me is that there's no longer any danger of this film getting shut down before production. Production ended last July. As I type this, the film is slowly being assembled for a 2012 release. I do love it when long and arduous tales from development hell get a happy ending.

Read the book a couple o' years ago. A movie would be pretty crazy, if done properly.

The only thing close to this that I read about was The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen's second book.

It was awesome, but I wouldn't say it was the most adequate source.

Holy kreps!

Someone wandered the set in Big Water, Utah with a sneaky camera!
If it's genuine, these lower-building details look spot-on for the ruined cities that the war-like green martians inhabit.
the rest would be added digitally I would think, many more levels required to flesh out these places as they are in the book.

Looks pretty cool, I'm planning on reading the book soon.

So did anyone else notice that they seemed to have dropped the "Of Mars" part of the title?

I think it sounds a little lame without it.

It's really really odd they would've dropped the "Of Mars" part, I can't see any reason for it.

Three words: "Mars Needs Moms."

....I don't get it, they dropped it because another one of their films had the word, "Mars", in it?

Well, it was one of the biggest and most humiliating box office flops in Disney's history, so call it a hunch.

This looks like it could be cool. Also majorly agree that just "John Carter" sounds lame.

My only contact with Carter is through Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

I notice a few modern green-screen clichés in the trailer. Slo-mo leaping with weapons (yawn) Star Warsy arena monster battle scene. But the movie looks like it's having a wad of cash thrown at post production, so the eye-candy factor seems enormous.

I wonder if about only ½% of the general movie public knows who Burroughs is, let alone Carter!

i am in the same position as you as far as knowledge of the character goes, and there is definitely a lot of this movie that makes me think "Avatar in a desert!" and "Attack of the Clones", but then again brad Bird didn't even know he ripped of watchmen in The Incredibles, I doubt he knows he ripped of star wars in this.

They should really have slapped on "From the creator of Tarzan" though :D
