Some say that movies are supposed to be made for money. Others say that movies should be made to enlighten. I say that it's neither: Movies are made to mislead. The best movies are the ones that make us forget, if only for a few hours, that nothing we're seeing onscreen is real.

The best movies lead us to emotionally invest in their characters. The outstanding ones can lead us to believe that robots, aliens and werewolves are real and dangerous. But the films that can make us emotionally invested in those nonexistant creatures, what they do and what happens to them... well, those are masterpieces.

Let us never forget that above all else, movies are magic. They bring the incredible to life, if only in our minds and if only for a few hours.

Stan Winston is now dead, but his magic lives on. Let us not mourn this extraordinary man -- let us mourn the miracles he had yet to accomplish.
