Now I normally wouldn't care about this movie, Tim Burton's movies have all been shit for the better part of 15 years, buuut i thought it would be worth posting about because it has Jackie Earl Haley and Chloe Moretz in it,
Burton regulars Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp are in it too obviously.
it seems to be getting a good buzz since it looks more to be going back to Burton's roots visually than his more recent outings.

it's a remake of some old Gothic soap opera apparently, although I never heard of it until this movie was announced.

I've never even heard of this, but it seems intrigueing and I might check out a bit of the original series.

My confidence in this film was shaken quite badly when I saw that first photo of Depp, but he actually looks halfway decent in that cast photo. I need to see more.

It's not like he uses the same actors all the time, he just goes through phases.
If you look at his early career, it seemed like the only actor he liked was Micheal Keaton, and after that he moved onto Winona Ryder, and then Depp.

Must be said though, this has been a REALLY long phase !

And he's made far more movies with Depp in them than he did with Keaton. In fact, he's only done three films with the latter.

To be honest, if Burton is going to use any actor in all of his movies, I'm glad it's Depp, has he ever done a bad performance?

Thought the writing has most of the blame here.

but he still made it decent for what he was given, yes? i thought the movie itself was bland but depp made it somewhat entertaining for his screentime.

Look up "The Astronaut's Wife" sometime.

I never thought his portrayal of Jack Sparrow was particularly good, but that's because it irritated me.

Looking at that promo photo, my reaction was very similar to Lil' Bernie's. I'm just kind of tired of HBC being in every Burton film, talented as she is. Even Scorsese didn't use De Niro every time.

I remember my dad used to watch this show when he was younger, but I've never seen it. Is there anybody here who actually watched the show and can reccomend it?

but Scorsese isn't married to De Niro (right?)

also i kind of liked Jack Sparrow, even if he is kind of annoying, you can't deny that Depp is both committed, consistent, and believable, as much as he can be with such a character, with his portrayal.

I don't think it ever aired in New Zealand, but I remember seeing advertisements and the odd write up in my older brother's comics and annuals that I inherited (which is the same resource that introduced me to silver/bronze age D.C. comics... it was a big, tattered cardboard box of amazing-ness).

So Dark Shadows has this iconic presence in my mind. The stills and blurbs were enough to give me the background that here was a gothic era vampire living in 'modern' 1960's America, suffering some sort of crisis of conscience. I also got the impression it divided audiences back then. It may well be the right kinda material to breath some life back into Tim Burton's output. Here's hoping.
And yes, I hated his 'Alice'.

Isn't that criteria for good acting though ? If he didn't make you feel anything then he's not doing his job.

No, not exactly. If the character was meant to be irritating, then yes, Depp achieved what he set out to do, but if the character isn't meant to be irritating than there's another problem altogether.
