As the son of two optometrists, I detest and abhor any stereotype or cultural expectation that leads people to turn down getting glasses in favor of abusing contact lenses.

That is all.

I'm confused, is there anything wrong, health-wise speaking, with using contact lenses ?

Not if one uses them properly.

Forgive the thread derailment, but I've spent 24 years' worth of dinners listening to my parents share horror stories about their patients. Nine times out of ten, it's some ugly complication that comes from abusing contact lenses.

In my experience, someone who's dumb enough to refuse glasses because of some ridiculous preconceived notion is dumb enough to wear the same pair of contact lenses for a month straight without removing them or cleaning them once.

Well I wouldn't turn to contact lenses just to avoid wearing glasses. I just might not get thick, black frames in the future. I once tried contacts lenses a few years ago but couldn't go through with it. I just couldn't put them on. I get very uncomfortable if something is close to my eye, and you basically have to touch your eyeball in order to put them in. My eyes blink rapidly even when drops are put in my eyes. So, I've stuck with frames. It can be kind of a pain in the ass, especially when I scratched one of the lenses recently, in an awkward spot. Still, I probably wouldn't feel like myself without them.

I remember hearing a funny story about Drew Carey. He said he got laser eye surgery to correct his vision. He was feeling good about not having to wear glasses, until he realized that wearing glasses was something of his signature. This was while he had a show on the air, and so he had to start wearing frames without a prescription. Irony!

I wore glasses for about 4 years before switching to contacts, and I've stayed with contacts simply because I don't have to readjust them when I move my head and in the kitchen that I work they don't fog up, get greasy, etc.

Here's the thing. That really isn't an exaggeration.I can't count how many times a day I have to push my frames up on the bridge of my nose, or wipe a smudge. And reading becomes difficult when you have a scratch in the middle of your lens. And in the summertime, having to switch between glasses and sunglasses. Since I'd need a prescription for them, I simply wear sunglasses without a prescription. But who needs to see clearly, right? Honestly, if anyone of you ever needs eyeglasses but there's a chance you can wear contacts, do it.

Yeah, just another reason contacts are better

My original point was that if you're given the choice between glasses or contact lenses, don't go with the latter just because of some absurd idea like "glasses look stupid," or "glasses are for hipsters," or whatever else have you.

Glasses look like stupid hipsters.

Anyway, I wear glasses most of the time and they don't bother me that much, but I also wear contacts occasionally.

I think I got that, I was just saying that for me contacts are more practical and I'm not a skinny jean wearing hipster

A couple of years ago when I was wearing my glasses I'd hear questions like "are those glasses fake?"
These days, the question I hear is "are those glasses real? You've been wearing them all day."
Damn hipsters.

OK, but I don't think any of us brought that up or suggested that.

I know. I was just trying to bring the thread back on track by restating my original point.

Having a girlfriend makes your sense of humour go out of whack

my girlfriend wears both glasses and contact lenses depending on situation, contact lenses for dressing up smart, or going to concerts, glasses for ease of use, mornings, reading in bed, work, driving etc.

since i have near perfect vision, i cannot use my own experience for this conversation, oh well.
