So i know for a fact that Curi and Feli have read this book, don't know about anybody else. I am still plowing through this book and I know that I will want to discuss it as time goes by, hence why I opened this thread.

So is it bad that I find myself relating to Hank Rearden in a way?

I can't speak for Curi, but I think this is a VERY interesting question.

Do you believe there's anything wrong with relating to Hank Rearden ?

No, I think he's a very driven hard working guy. I also agree with his anti-governmental tampering stance, but i'm sure you guys knew I would.

There's something about Hank Rearden which I dislike a lot, but I won't say it right now, at least not until you get further in the novel.

Still, of all the characters I think he is the most likable one, his circumstances are reasonable enough to get some sort of sympathy from the reader, unlike Francisco, who is quite dull.

Speakng of i'm going to cross the 200 page barrier tonight

I don't really like Francisco, he's just annoying and stuck up, he's been given so much without having to struggle for it like Hank, or to to a lesser extent Dagny

You've seen nothing yet, wait until you get to Francisco's speech about money, HOLY SHIT.

Also, pretty much every objectivist character in the novel (with the probable exception of Rearden) is stuck up and preachy, most of them are just cookie-cutter imprints of Ayn Rand herself.

Not that they are bad, but it's how they are, more exaggerated with Francisco, who competes with John Galt for the "most obnoxious" category.

I have noticed that's a problem with this novel when she's trying to get ehr ideas across the dialogue is more like a text book than a novel. I wouldn't mind reading a text book on objectivism, but in this case I'm looking for a novel

Then feel perfectly free to skip to the end of any monologue once it starts reading like a diatribe. Trust me, you won't be missing anything.

To be perfectly honest, from what I know of objectivism besides it's stark disagreement/condemnation with/of Christianity I could see myself subscribing to her theories

It's probably what I'd end up thinking of the book if I read it.

So now I'll read it.

A warning to everybody there will be spoilers in this thread from here on out because I want to discuss with Curi and Feli, continue reading at your own peril.

I was a little startled by the erotica that was Rearden's fantasy, I mean I knew it was coming (and I totally wanted it to come) but it just seemed out of place in this highly intellectual novel to have a bit of erotica throw in

Also, I broke the 200 page barrier 968 pages to go!

Uuuhhhmm, that's not really erotica, even then, I don't think (in my humble opinion) that there's anything wrong with "sex scenes" in any kind of fiction, as intellectual as it may be.

Though some people have commented on the........."intensity" of those parts of the novel

That's all I was getting at with the erotica comment, how vivid it was

A disturbing read on so many levels... I was left with the feeling that Rand somehow lacks a crucial piece of the humanity-jigsaw. I put the book down and felt... dirty.

But for a peek inside the minds of the 1%... invaluable.

:P

I think reading, or at least knowing what Objectivism is, is important today. It's ridiculous how relevant it is to everyone who lives in a capitalist society.

But, despite Rand's prowess as a writer, Atlas Shrugged IS NOT the book to read if you want to know what Objectivism is about, that novel is for when your mind is already made.

Huh. Wish I'd known that when I picked the book up. But then again, I only asked that Atlas Shrugged would be a 1,000+ page book that I could read to pass a whole load of time, so there you go.

As for the sex scenes, I think that they're really just part of Rand's argument that sexuality isn't a thing to be suppressed and that love should be a mutual thing.

Perfect choice in that case !

She was quite ahead of her time in some aspects, even if I still remember plenty of those scenes with laughter as a response.
