Joe Wright(Pride & Prejudice,Atonement,Hanna) Directing Anna Karenina
Quote:
Joe Wright will direct the epic romance Anna Karenina, adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel by Academy Award winner Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love). The Working Title Films production will commence filming in the U.K. and Russia this month. Focus Features will distribute the movie domestically, and Universal Pictures International (UPI) will distribute the movie internationally, in the second half of 2012.

Anna Karenina marks Mr. Wright’s third Working Title movie with Focus and UPI, following the award-winning boxoffice successes Pride & Prejudice and Atonement. Also for Working Title and UPI, he directed The Soloist; also for Focus, he most recently directed the hit adventure thriller Hanna.

Keira Knightley, Academy Award-nominated for Pride & Prejudice, will star as Anna Karenina in her third collaboration with Mr. Wright. Ms. Knightley will be starring opposite two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law, as Anna’s husband Aleksei Karenin; and Aaron Johnson (Nowhere Boy), as Count Vronsky. Rounding out the cast will be Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice), Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), Alicia Vikander (The Seventh Son), two-time Academy Award nominee Emily Watson, Olivia Williams (Hanna), and Ruth Wilson (Luther).

Also reteaming with Mr. Wright on Anna Karenina are Academy Award-winning composer Dario Marianelli, twice-Academy Award-nominated costume designer Jacqueline Durran, and three-time Academy Award-nominated production designer Sarah Greenwood. The cinematographer will be Academy Award winner Philippe Rousselot. Melanie Ann Oliver (Focus’ Jane Eyre) will edit the feature. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui will be the choreographer on the movie.

The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna (Ms. Knightley) questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community.

Another reason why 2012 is pairing up to be a great year for film. Sadly, I haven't seen Hanna yet (or Pride and Prejudice for that matter, but Atonement and The Soloist were enough to confirm for me that Joe Wright is a very good director) .

I enjoyed Hanna, despite a few issues I have with how it ends.

Still, given that this is another adaptation of classic literature with Keira Knightley as the lead, I think that Pride and Prejudice is the more applicable precedent. And that gives me very little hope for this film.

That said, the cast looks incredible. But on the other hand, so did the cast of Pride and Prejudice.

To be fair, maybe it's better for those audience members who haven't read the book or seen the far superior BBC adaptation. I wouldn't know.

All I do know is that the transitions to show the passage of time are terribly done, the overall running time is so insufficiently short that the subplots have absolutely zero breathing room, Wright spends way too much time photographing the set designs at the expense of time for character development, and -- with very few exceptions -- the characters' portrayals are entirely wrong.

EDIT: Okay, after re-reading my notes, I take back the part about the characters' portrayals. What I meant to say is that several key roles are either poorly adapted or poorly acted. Donald Sutherland is probably the worst offender, as his portrayal of Mr. Bennet didn't do even the slightest bit of justice to one of the funniest and most memorable characters in the book.

And Oscar nominations be damned, Keira Knightley was not equal to the task of playing the lead.

i guess I'll have to see for myself

Atonement is still one of my fav. films and the fact that it was not nominated for best picture is still a crime

Looks interesting, wonder if they'll go with accents or do the "transition translation" thing they did with Valkyrie.

they're all british, i see no reason for the transition translation thing

also, never heard of this book, but i am interested based solely on the casting alone.

The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting ?!

To be fair, Keira Knightley's Russian accent in A Dangerous Method was one of the precious few highlights of her performance in that film.

Joe Wright is a cunt.
This is something that needs to be said on any Joe Wright-related thread.
Carry on.
