Japanese humor is weird. I probably should have remembered Battlefield Baseball, but I didn't, so I was kind of caught off-guard by this movie. It's a mockumentary about the life of a Japanese superhero in a similar vein to something like This is Spinal Tap. I chuckled here and there throughout most of the film, but it was just really odd for the most part. The monster parts are really surreal and most of the humor is very dry. Still, it was enjoyable none the less. Then it got to the ending sequence where everything just goes completely off the rails. It pretty much had me in tears and was well worth watching the entire movie for, in my opinion. You'd probably appreciate it more if you're familiar with Ultraman, but I've gotta think it's hilarious regardless. But anyway, yeah, you won't find anything else like it, that's for sure.

And incidentally, I am the movie thread. Coocoocachoo.

Agreed, but good luck enjoying the climax of Raiders as much or at all, now you've seen this.
Way too far past homage. Way too famous in its own right, when it doesn't have that right.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

God help me, I didn't find this movie to be nearly as funny as its reputation would suggest. A big part of this is probably due to the fact that I didn't see Steve Martin's character as a self-absorbed asshole and I didn't see John Candy's character as a worthless lump who causes bad luck, as much as the movie tried to convince me otherwise.

I guess the best word to describe this movie is "uneven." For every joke that worked for me, there's one that didn't. For every heartwarming moment, there's one that falls a little flat. Steve Martin, John Candy, and John Hughes are all far more than talented enough to see this movie through, though it's definitely not the best entry on any of their respective filmographies.

Also, the score is unacceptably bad.

I also saw Immortals yesterday.
Ugh.

6.9/10

Far inferior than anything even I expected.
But at least it was something pretty to look at for a couple hours.
May even make something fun to revisit on Blu Ray just to flex some HD muscles.

Jonah Hex, it was alright guess, helped by the great cast, but the plot was kind of sucky, reminded me of Wild Wild West without any jokes, not the most glowing comparison

Still a mind-blowing movie.
Felt the need to revisit it.

And this time it loses some points.
from 10/10 to 8.5/10

The last act breaks the trend, throwing out the established psychological outline that SHOULD'VE escalated,
only it didn't.
It reverts to a simple and annoying twist of events in the last act without really pushing the envelope where it should've.

For anyone who's seen it...
SPOILER ALERT IN THE EXTREME:


When Kim Soo-Hyeon started stalking Kyung Chul, and it was a reversal of the hunter and the hunted, it was frighteningly good.
Not because I wanted Chul to get punished like that, which I did, but because you had to question Kim's actions.
It put his character into questionable territory. Possibly making him as much of a villain as Chul.
However, when he gets to the cannibals' house, things get shoved in our face. We're TOLD outright about this reversal as if leaving for us to discover it wasn't okay. Not only this, but the tables are turned again immediately after that whole sequence.
And the switch back to Chul having the upper hand is a poor move.
It feels cliched.
And it immediately takes the emphasis off the progression that Kim was making into 'the dark side'.
It quickly shows us the severe ramifications of his actions, like slapping him on the hand, showing what he did was bad,
but it would've been more powerful and thought provoking if the movie did NOT make those conclusions for us.
If the tables were never turned at the cannibals' it would have escalated with Kim hunting and hurting Chul, to such a point where you really REALLY had to question who the bad guy is. Which is not even a question once you go back to the beginning and remind yourself what Chul did/does. But if the movie was structured right, it would have blurred all the lines you'd taken for granted by the end.

END OF MASSIVE SPOILERS!

So which it never loses its edge, and the tension NEVER lets up, I do not personally like the last act.
It disappointed in a big way. However it is an acceptable conclusion to the story, just not the most thought provoking one.
It rides out the last act on emotion front rather than a psychological aspect. And no, the final 10 minutes did not make up for that.

Still an amazing movie thats absolutely worth seeing. Just not perfect in my book.

I'm not completely sure I agree. My memory obviously isn't as fresh as yours, but if I understand you correctly, you think the last act *was weak because it lets up a bit on the ambiguity of the situation, but his fiancee's father and sister die because he decided to torture Kyung-chul instead of having him arrested or killing him outright. In that way, I really do think his actions are not only questionable, but deplorable, but maybe I missed your point, I'm not sure.*

Anyway, I saw this and I loved it.



And I have to say, I don't think it deserves a lot of the flak it's getting. There are going to be people who just don't like this film and that's fine, but if you know what you're getting into and you're into this type of off the rails crazy movie, then I'd have to believe you'll adore it. So I guess just a couple of comments here. First of all, it should probably be noted that this is to the first Ghost Rider movie as The Incredible Hulk is to the first Hulk movie and it's most likely better off for it. Second comment, it's a really beautiful film to look at. Between the stylized madness that runs rampant throughout the thing including its periodic animated segments and the on-location shooting in Turkey, its just really a treat to look at.

So basically, if you want a crazy stylized action movie with a (pretty frightening) demon with a flaming skull for a head with crazy Nicolas Cage acting throughout, then this is the movie for you.

But as per ISTD, no I didn't like the last act because (spoilers ahead)
I wanted Kim to keep hunting Chul, keep injuring him, escalating it to the point where Chul is psychologically destroyed. But instead, Chul got out from under Kim's thumb and went all vengeance berserker. Not a twist I liked.
