And not made by Disney.

Well well.. this looks a lot more interesting than Avatar.
Space opera! YES!!!

Nice to see some of the characterisation, the world, the textures and 'reality'. This reel has finally got me properly convinced that this could be a bloody good afternoon at the movies.

yep, and their all legally free ebooks!

I won't read them back to back though, I'll probably read the next one in a few months, the story and world building is awesome, but as with Lovecraft, the early 20thC writing style rubs me the wrong way, not so much that I don't like the book, but just enough I would dread reading more than one book written in that way back to back.

Lovecraft conveys a certain sense of dread... but Burroughs' Mars series gets better(if I recall correctly) as it goes along.

oh I'm sure it does, but the general lack of dialogue, (and where there is any, stilted and overly formal) and general prevalence of run-on events, and the general fact that John Carter is just the best at everything. period. I don't see that changing in further novels.

Sweet. I'm really looking forward to this. Just seems like it should be a really fun time at the movies.

Nice. The bare-bones of the book has been nicely fleshed out. Go the pulps!

John Carter - 8/10

A damn fun time at the movies.
Has all the right stuff to put the magic back into saturday matinees.
Its a far cry from perfect, but scene to scene it definitely works.
Its classic material that evokes an early "Star Wars" feel, with old fashioned heroics and adventure.
Not bad. Its a good start.

Just got back from seeing that one myself, and I've got A LOT to say about it. When I'm done, this may well be the longest review I've ever written.

Bottom line: Go see it.

feli, my review is currently over 2100 words long. I wouldn't be typing that much if it was all praise.

The movie sure as hell isn't perfect, but it's still easily worth your time and money.

Yeah, pretty much all the local newspapers are giving it poor to bad reviews.
