Sort of the bitter, angry, disillusioned counterpart to "What Games Are You Playing Now?" I've created this thread because I need to vent.

So I just finished Final Fantasy XIII-2 tonight. It took forever because real life (that old bitch!) kept intervening, but with Mass Effect 3 on the way I resolved to just hunker down and complete the damn thing by today.

Suffice to say *SPOILER ALERT* for this game and any that may be discussed in the thread, but the ending (called the "Standard Ending") was just beyond lame. The entire game is spent traveling through time to prevent one specific event from happening, thusly keeping one specific really bad outcome from happening. So at the end, everything sems hunky dory right? And then BOOM the game purports that every action you've done in the game to stop this Really Bad Thing from happening has really just caused that thing to happen. Plus 1 (2?) protagonist(s) die(s) and another from the original Final Fantasy XIII who went unmentioned the entire game pops up 500 years in the future all smiles with no explanation. Obvi because he's getting his own DLC to tell his own BS story.

Then, to top it all off, the screen goes black and says:

TO BE CONTINUED.

Bullshit. I call complete BS.

Dear Square,

Screw your DLC. Screw your mediocre storytelling. Screw your Paradox Endings. There is only one true ending, and it was a complete "F-You" to everyone who put their time and effort into your paltry 25 hours (at 60 dollars, no less) of campaign.

- Mal

^That's why I haven't touched a Final Fantasy game after 9.

:(

X was amazing. You should give the HD remake a try for PS3 or Vita when you get a chance. The story, characters, visuals, and gameplay were excellent across the board.

Final Fantasy X-2, however, gets more wrath from me than XIII-2.

9 was the last FF game I played. My Final Fantasy Experience goes like this:

Final Fantasy VII - Had never played a Final Fantasy before, but heard good things about the series and the game looked pretty cool. It was the main reason why I bought a Playstation (bought a year in anticipation of the game). First real RPG I ever played. I love the game, even if it probably hasn't held up as well as I think it has. Still, Square threw everything but the kitchen sink into that game, there are just too many cool moments/things you can do.

Final Fantasy VIII - I skipped this one. I played a demo of it, and for some reason wasn't impressed.

Final Fantasy IX - Visually more consistent than VII, but the story is kind of forgettable, the music isn't that great, the characters are okay, and the villain sucks.

Final Fantasy VI - I actually really wanted to play the game when it was Final Fantasy III on the SNES. Eventually played it on the PS. The game was buggy as hell. Almost decided to return it and get a refund, but it worked just well enough that I could still play it. But Lord, what a buggy game. Sometimes the game wouldn't work, sometimes it would be really pixelated. I don't know if my PS was just getting too old by then, or what, but it was so bad I didn't even try to play and finish V. But for its time, a great game, great characters, great music, etc. They should have kept Amano and never made Nomura the full time character designer because after that, it looked like every FF starred some teenage, quasi Asian looking guy, and some weird futuristic setting.

Final Fantasy Tactics - Love the graphics, awesome music, have no idea what it's about since the game is sofrigginhardatthestart. This game took months to complete, so I forgot most of the story. I usually find fighting in RPGs to be tedious, but with this game it's kind of necessary, so you have to spend all this time leveling up. Then, suddenly it becomes stupid easy, and you find you've abruptly beaten the game. Total backward learning curve with this game.

Final Fantasy: Advent Children. This made me realize just how fruity Final Fantasy VII was. All the characters look quasi Asian (look, I'm not saying looking half Asian is bad, but it just looks weird in this game), and I'm not sure the world translates all that well when made to look realistic.

We don't seem to have a Final Fantasy thread here, and that seems to be where the discussion is heading, so I went ahead and changed the thread title.

I love the series, but I don't care for much of anything that came out after VII, apart from Dissidia, which was fun, and some of the other handheld games.
My favourite game in the series is VI, and it's probably my favourite game of all time. The gameboy advance version of it seems to be the best one.

Dissidia was pretty fun apart from shit story and voice acting.

Honestly Crisis Core was surprisingly amazing. My favorite game that I played on the PSP hands down.

Grab a GBA emulator and play the GBA port of FF6

The games often share similar themes, and also enemies, wildlife and concepts, along with a few other little things that leak into all the games, but they all take place in different universes, except for ones that are direct sequels to existing games (Such as Crisis Core or FFX2).
There's also usually a character named Cid who has something to do with airships, but he's always a completely different guy.
There are other characters like this such as Gilgamesh, who is always a guy with multiple arms, but again, he's always different.

I will admit to say that I'm one of the few who genuinely enjoyed XIII; though, everything I've heard of part 2 sounds pretty mediocre.

Honestly, something needs to happen with the JRPG, as its becoming as stale and boring as the First-Person-Shooter. There's an article on Joystiq that addresses this problem, and I do like one of the suggestions the author makes:

joystiq wrote:
I see an RPG with a battle system in the mold of something like Final Fantasy IV, with lush 2D graphics. In an ideal world, it would have a sense of humor about itself, and wouldn't be afraid to have a few pokes at the genre's well-worn conventions -- the burning villages, evil religions, and airships that we've all come to know and love.

I'd say start out with the games on the playstation with FF7 and FF9 (perhaps my favorite Final Fantasy).
