I was a little skeptical at first since the marketing was so spotty and everything, but this actually came off very well. It feels a bit long at times between action scenes, but the charm present throughout the movie is enough to make you care and keep it going. I really got the same great sense of excitement, adventure, and planetary romance I felt while reading the book so I'd say that this movie is a very successful adaptation in that regard.

Also, I like the references they made in the movie to both the title of the novel and the excised "Of Mars" from the title of the film.

Silent House

This movie isn't scary. Plain and simple. Elizabeth Olsen is an amazing actress and the camerawork has some brilliant moments, but this film is beyond saving.

His pay is our eternal gratitude.

The laughter of every child.

Anyway, saw this.

And in a packed theater no less. It was a pretty great time all in all.

Both wrong, it's always been a battle between Goldfinger Vs. The Spy Who Loved Me for best Bond movie.

Those are both definitely in my top five, but From Russia With Love seems closest to the Bond from the books for me.

For some reason I can't remember From Russia With Love...................maybe I haven't seen it ?

Whatever the case, it's not Thunderball, which sucked horribly, and for some reason it's Connery's favorite Bond movie :|

I think Thunderball is pretty great actually, has some of my favourite Bond scenes.

Thunderball is great.
From Russia With Love is too, and it does indeed follow the book closest (plotwise at least). That's not a major priority for me, though. I think Bond's evolution has been as important as anything. FRWL is a great film because it's great filmically, and it's Tarantino's favourite I believe.
It's been a while since I've watched the series, but You Only Live Twice was always my favourite. Very silly but a lot of fun thanks to Roald Dahl's script.

... I really like Carly Simon's "nobody does it better." *looks around* that is all I have to contribute to this discussion.

I'd probably have to put down You Only Live Twice or Goldfinger as my favorite.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

God help me, I think this movie is overrated.

Don't get me wrong, the visuals and the animation are of the sterling quality I've come to expect from Miyazaki. But the plotting and the character development, not so much. The characters are all completely devoid of nuance, which makes for a boring and predictable narrative.

The movie is serviceable in spite of that, but it's nowhere near worthy enough to be considered Miyazaki's masterpiece.

nausicca is more of an artsy film, for miyazaki. i think howl's flying castle or my neighbor totoro are his top films.

Aside from Ponyo, that's the one Miyazaki film I really can't stand.

@Curiousity

You're absolutely correct about Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind; I came away less than impressed by the film, and practically bruised and battered by its heavy-handed pro-environmentalist message. Not to say that a film can't teach you anything--because that would be silly to suggest otherwise--but I much prefer a film to be subtle with its message. Some of the better Miyazaki films such as Porco Rosso, My neighbor totoro, castle in the sky, and Spirited Away, don't go out of their way to try to teach you something and instead focus on making an entertaining feature film.
