So how did you feel about the rape scene, and how it was handled? I know that he was supposed to "get his soul back", but I wonder what kind of message it sends when Buffy, who is supposed to be this tough female role model, took him back?

Ugh, as IF! I dug that they delved into his attempted rape which was really upsetting to watch. But it was lame that it just led to a freaking redemption arc for Spike which I could have cared less about. And luckily she never got back with spike (on the show at least), but it was a bit ridic that he even existed in the seventh season in any form. Then again they had him sacrifice himself at the end of the season. And then undercut that sacrifice by having him come back on Angel. Honestly, he was a pretty good fit in Angel's last season, and they probably should have shipped him over there earlier where darker characters and themes ran hand in hand with each other. That whole show was about redemption and about characters making shitty decisions in attempts to find happiness and do the right thing, so he would have fit right in. And his absence at that point probably would have made Buffy a better show.

Basically I'm torn. On one hand it's realistic that while he did attempt to rape her she knew she had a large hand in that after using him knowing how deeply "in love" with her he was. And it makes sense that, especially given the soul, she might be able to come to forgive him.

Then again, I've condemned Bella Swan as a character for much, much less.

I've been watching season 4 off an on. I can't really seem to get into it. Rylie is an okay character, although he's a bit bland (also, is it me or is his Black friend totally in love with him?). We saw the return of Faith (yay), only to have her skip town after all mess she created (boo). That was a fun episode, seeing SMG acting like Dushku, and vice versa. But the show has an annoying habit of following a major episode with some goofy stand alone episode.

Yeah it does although I suppose many others do that as well: plot heavy episode followed by throw away episode. Oddly enough one of my favorites of that season is pangs, the thanksgiving themed episode, which was hilarious all around.

Riley was essentially panned as being universally boring. But I liked the message he sent to buffy: as much as she went on about how she wanted a normal boyfriend she found, in the end, that she really wasn't interested and didn't care. It wasn't much of a revelation, but it was one worth noting for her to have. Far as I know he's the only "normal" person (not including the dude she sleeps with early I'm season 4) that buffy has a relationship with. Even satsu in season eight was a slayer.

Overall season 4 was one of the weakest seasons imo, particularly following the outstanding season three.

At least when faith ran off she went onto a 2 or 3 episode arc on angle which was also having a rocky first season. I can really only recommend sticking with season 4 because basically from the moment buffy finds out riley is a part of the initiative in Hush onward the season builds pretty big momentum as she herself gets more involved.

But... Yeah season five was loads better and such a great ending theme for what would have been a final season. I also have to say that The Gift as a series finale is loads better than Chosen and just so much more poignant.

Let me stop, I could go on about this show for ages.

I loved the Sci-Fi elements on season 4, and I think it was the first season with a really memorable arc,

I disagree. The stuff with the mayor in season 3 blew that shit outta the water

only because he's Quark. if he wasn't Quark you'd have forgotten him by now,

and to be honest, I all I remember was some stuff with him and Faith, I remember almost everything about season 4.

I don't know what Quark is...

Sounds like a Star Trek reference.

it was, and then I realised that I was thinking of the Principal. :? this is pretty embarrassing, but it does go to prove the point, the mayor wasn't even that memorable.

actually, outside of Angel and Spike, I think the Mayor was the *most* memorable season-long villain the series had. Not to shit on your opinion or anything, but I think season three is widely regarded among most fans of the series as being its strongest. To say that theonly stuff you remember from that season was the Mayor and Faith actually says a lot: for two "villains" to have enough of an affect on your viewing experience that you remember them so well is a great thing - on many other shows the villains are periphery, and their relationships nonexistent.

Season 4 imo was the most forgettable outside of season 1. The sci-fi elements were a neat addition, but I actually think as an arc it was one of the weakest - The Initiative was the sort of villainous entity you could only view as ominous if you really legit cared about... well, The Initiative. The Master, Spike/Dru, The Mayor, Glory, The Nerdnerd/Evil Willow, and The First all wanted to actively destroy the world and/or Buffy from jump. The Initiative was really just going around doing its thing and only became a legit threat because Buffy got a little too involved and Lindsay Crouse (God, I can't remember her character's name) got annoyed. And then her master plan was to create a really big, ugly super soldier. Granted, it took a lot of mystical voodoo for Buffy's crew to take out, but The Initiative, as a villain, didn't really have a plan or a direction or any clear motivation.

Not to mention that, as t3cii said, caring about The Initiative also meant caring about Riley or Buffy's relationship with him, which essentially NOBODY did.

Sidenote, if were to rank the seasons: 3, 2, 5, 7 (the first 10 episodes in particular were quite strong), 6, 4, 1

Also, I had no idea he was Quark until now. And the only Star Trek I watched was Voyager, anyway.

Bear in mind I haven't seen Buffy since it originally aired, so my opinion is worth shit anyway. :D I probably remember season 4 better than 3 because I watched it a year more recently, and I was probably 14 or something when season 4 aired, which is the demographic that season was pretty much aimed at.
