In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race’s next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew “Ender” Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn’t make the cut–young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Ender’s skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers, Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.

Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender’s two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If the world survives, that is.

Asa Butterfield (Hugo) was offered the lead in Ender’s Game, we can confirm that the young actor will indeed portray Andrew/Ender, the third Wiggin sibling. Fans of the source material (the 1985 Hugo/Nebula Award-winning novel by Orson Scott Card) will be happy to see that sights are now set on casting Colonel Hyrum Graff. None other than sci-fi fan-favorite Harrison Ford is reportedly being eyed for the role. Who better to play the aging Commander of Training for the International Fleet than the grizzled veteran?

Orson Scott Card is a fuckhead.

Not that I disagree, but it's hardly a reason to completely dismiss his work.

TRUE GRIT star Hailee Steinfeld is in negotiations to star as the female lead in OddLot Entertainment’s sci-fi ENDER'S GAME, Variety's Jeff Sneider reports.

HUGO star Asa Butterfield is set to play the title character, a gifted young gamer skilled in strategy and logistics who’s recruited by the government to help battle an insect-like alien race. Steinfeld is in talks to play Petra Arkanian, the only girl in Salamander Army who quickly becomes Ender’s ally and trusted right hand. OddLot is in the process of casting the pic’s adult lead of Colonel Hyrum Graff, who trains the young male recruits at an elite military academy. Several thesps are in the mix, including sci-fi veteran Harrison Ford.

After confronting extraterrestrials in both "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "Cowboys & Aliens," Harrison Ford is ready to take on another alien race, as he has officially joined the cast of OddLot Entertainment's sci-fi adventure tentpole "Ender's Game" along with fellow Oscar nominees Abigail Breslin and Hailee Steinfeld.Also onboard are young thesps Aramis Knight, Moises Arias, Jimmy "Jax" Pinchak, Suraj Parthasarathy, Conor Carroll and Khylin Rhambo.
Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") is directing from his own script, which is adapted from Orson Scott Card's award-winning novel. Summit Entertainment is co-financing and will release the film in the U.S. on March 15, 2013.

Carroll ("Away We Go") will play Bernard, the leader of the new recruits who bullies Ender at first; and Rhambo will play Dink, a brainy member of Rat Army.
OddLot, K/O Paper Products and Digital Domain are production partners on "Ender's Game." OddLot's Gigi Pritzker and Linda McDonough are producing with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman via their K/O Paper Products banner, as well as Lynn Hendee, Robert Chartoff and Card. OddLot's Bill Lischak and K/O's Mandy Safavi will exec produce with Digital Domain's Cliff Plumer and Ed Ulbrich. Sierra/Affinity is handling foreign sales for the pic, which will start production in early 2012 in New Orleans.
Ford, who's no stranger to sci-fi epics, recently signed on to play famed Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey in Legendary Pictures' Jackie Robinson biopic "42."
Steinfeld starred in the Coen brothers' "True Grit" and will soon play Juliet in Carlo Carlei's upcoming adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic romance. Breslin can currently be seen in Garry Marshall's "New Year's Eve" and the indie "Janie Jones."

Would've preferred Chloe Moretz as Valentine, but Abigail Breslin is a very talented young actress as well.

Ben Kingsley and Brandon Soo Hoo (G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra) are set to join Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Stanfield and Abigail Breslin in the film version of Orson Scott Card’s bestselling novel Ender’s Game. The feature is a futuristic adventure a young strategist (Butterfield) who is drafted by the International Fleet to save the human race from hostile alien invaders.Kingsley, repped by CAA and the UK’s Independent Talent Group, will play Mazer Rackham, a legendary war hero. Soo Hoo, repped by Paradigm and DreamScope, will play Fly Molo.Summit Entertainment is co-financing and will release the film domestically March 15, 2013. Production is set for next month in New Orleans.

Variety reports that Oscar Nominated Viola Davis has joined the adaptation of Ender’s Game. Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) directs and Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Ben Kingsley, and Harrison Ford round out the cast that seems to get better by the day. Davis will play a military psychologist who is tasked with overseeing the emotional welfare of the young trainees

I don't remember any such character in the books. She's probably an amalgam of several characters, brought in to expedite the many debates on the subject of how far these kids can be pushed, as well as to try and balance out the overwhelmingly male cast.

God, I completely forgot about the Desks! I can't begin to imagine how the hell those are going to be adapted for the screen.
