Richard Price did some writing for The Wire, so that prompted me to check this book out. It's not bad for a "slice of life" story, but with these types of stories it's all about the characters, and you can forget about the idea of there being any real plot. It's basically about a guy trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life, and his relationship to his girlfriend.

By the way, Avatar, have you ever read A Voyage to Arcturus? I ask because you seem to read a lot of sci-fi.

No, I've never even heard of it actually, I'm currently reading through a specific set of SF books published by Gollancz called the SF Masterworks, which I bought the first 30 books quite cheaply, it's my goal to read all of them, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SF_Masterworks
I've read #1-14, 16-18, 21, and 22, I'm currently reading #15

That's a pretty cool goal. I've browsed through that list before, but right now I'm mainly going by just random assorted books I want to read, so the only one in the series I plan to read in the near future is The Demolished Man, which I see you've read. Was it pretty good?

Anyway, I recommend A Voyage to Arcturus. It was assigned to me as the last book in my sci-fi lit class and it was pretty interesting, albeit extremely weird and occasionally confusing. It's basically an epic work of philosophy steeped in symbolism and allegory in the disguise of a planetary romance. Probably my favorite thing we've read all semester.

Edit: Oh, actually, I have The Fifth Head of Cerberus, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Man Plus, and Sirens of Titan (reading it now) on my to read list as well, but I forgot about those because they aren't the SF Masterworks editions.

I liked the demolished man but I preferred the stars my destination.

Cool, maybe I'll check that out as well.

Incidentally, I found out that A Voyage to Arcturus is included in the Fantasy Masterworks series. I think it's more science-fiction, but it does have a lot of mystical elements.

You should read it if for no other reason than that it's considered a classic of science-fiction.

You might hate it, though. And, honestly, there aren't really many mystical elements now that I think more about it. In fact, there are arguably none.

It should really be in the SF Masterworks series.

Ok, I'll see if I can find it somewhere and check it out. Thanks.

Have been upping my crime-fiction reading lately (and ignoring my final papers in the process!!!)

Image
Pretty much what I've come to expect from Mr. Ken Bruen: Dark, moody, and Irish as fuck.

Had my eye on this one for awhile, and the new trailer for Oliver Stone's adaptation made me finally grab this. It's pretty good, featuring a prose that's literally like a Quentin Tarantino film in book form. Though, I thought the ending was a bit weak and I'm curious how Stone will pull it off in the movie.

That's funny, I've been upping my crime-fiction lately in order to do my final papers.

Speaking of which, last book of the semester.

Pretty cool all in all, but it gets pretty weird towards the end and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it all.

Zebra sex, man. Zebra sex.

I just like to grab every opportunity I can when it comes to upping you on comics.

It's a rare occurrence and this is one of those opportunities.

Oh, because you read it first? I am pleased to inform you I don't read a lot of spider-man so you've actually read a lot of comics I haven't.

Yeah, but Infinity Gauntlet's a pretty big deal. I'm surprised you hadn't read it...

and I had!

I'm working through this, I'll finish it tonight. Not as good as Guantlet, but it's still very entertaining and a nice array of Marvel characters (Daredevil, Moon Knight, and Cap on one page? Yes please!) I also feel like Starlin is becoming one of my favorite writers, the way he grasps all the characters and writes them so uniquely is amazing to me.
