WJK said: *For instance, what's up with the mental powers? I mean, sure, they got it from going into that pool back in 1966, but what purpose does it serve?*
At first, I thought it had to do with a military application, and maybe it does, but I eventually figured that Arboria was just trying to create some type of super being connected to its spirituality or some such crazy thing.

WJK said: *Why is it that the girl was put into the pool,
She wasn't, I don't think. I'm pretty sure she was the daughter of Nyle and that one other girl in the 1966 scene. She just inherited her powers.*

WJK said: * and whatever happened to Arboria? Was he the mummified man in that random room?*
I think we just leave out Arboria as he's whacked out on drugs. Maybe he overdosed or something, but I don't think it's that big a deal. The mummified man is credited as "Mutant" in the credits, and he's played by a different guy, so I figure he's just some discarded experiment.

WJK said: *What is the Black Rainbow?*
My working theory while watching it was that it was the pyramid device that inhibited psychic powers. After Nyle said it in a quote, though, I'm not really sure.

WJK said: *What was with the voices Barry heard in his head?*
Not sure about that either.

WJK said: *What was the purpose of all these secondary characters? The employee, the caretaker, the two guys out in the wild, they realistically serve no purpose and all end up dying anyway.*
I think their purpose is really just to die. The employee dies to illustrate what Elena (the girl) can do with her powers, the caretaker (who it says on the internet is Nyle's wife, but I didn't really gather that) dies to show what Nyle's become, and, according to an interview, those two metal heads just die because the director felt like putting a cliche horror movie scene like that into his movie.

Make her watch it with you.

She might break up with you, though, and then you can start watching more movies :D

She's actually really cool about movies.
She loves 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Drive, and is willing to give the UC of Watchmen a shot.

=)

They're like sentinels or guards, I guess.

The real reason they exist, though, is probably two-fold.

1) Dr. Arboria is fucking insane.

and 2) Cosmatos thought they were cool and just wanted to put more insane stuff in his movie.

I really like them myself.

Eh, I think they're more along the lines of failed experiments, I mean they have a fuckin' baby's head on an adult's body for Christ's sake!

Yeah, I'd probably put that under the first category.

A very stylish little movie. Style over substance? Only if you read it in terms of current lame-o Hollywood dictums of attention span and pace.
Still, dropped the ball badly in the last 15 minutes with some cheap laughs and cop-out yuk-yuks. Edit out the whole stoners-in-the-corn sequence, and the stupid death scene, and you have the evil doc driving around looking for the girl and not finding her, and her walking towards the suburban houses and 'normalcy'. Fixed!

Exactly. The movie had tons of substance and I'm surprised more people don't see that.

The movie finally gets a DVD release for September Eleventh as well as special feature details.

I thought that was part of the charm.
there was an eerieness oozing from its ambiguity.
