Quote:
Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and–if he has his way–every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. “The Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.

That comic-book aesthetic is kind of off-putting at first (that Jay Z song doesn't help either), but it looks pretty fucking good.

Really though, I'm hoping for the best. It's a cool trailer and I'm not entirely turned-off with its visual flairs but Ruben Fleischer's previous films, while well shot, had poor structure or simply weren't very funny. I'll give this ago considering it shouldn't rely too heavily on executing comedy.

Can't see the trailer, but if Ryan Gosling is aboard, then this is not going to be a bad movie.

Movie looks kind of terrible. There seems to be this need to make all movies set in that time period look like Dick Tracey or The Untouchables. It looks kind of hokey.

Gosling and Stone playing each others love interests AGAIN!? are they like buddy-buddies in real life?

I love the Untouchables.
And I don't think theres anything wrong with Hollywood coming out with a movie like this every few years.

I've heard public enemies was slow...
So I avoided it.
Heres hoping this one is more action packed.

This..............it has nothing to do with what t3cii said

I kinda agree with t3cii, it's been done to death before.

Still, the cast looks VERY promising, that's a very good start.

When the trailer for "Gangster Squad" came out, it became clear that Warner Bros could never show it in theaters, since there's a scene that has armed men stepping from behind the screen at a movie theater, firing at the audience. But the trailer (watch it here) was shown in theaters, and in front of "The Dark Knight Rises."

After the Colorado shootings, the studio immediately removed the trailer from rotation and is now considering removing that scene from the movie altogether. The problem is that the scene's placement is very important to the film and changing anything could result in re-shoots and delaying the September 7th release date.

Update: Variety has learned that Warner Bros will cut the scene from "Gangster Squad" and is now planning reshoots.

The scene is nothing more than a coincidence and has nothing to do with the tragedy, so it's not clear why the studio feels it's critical to change anything in the movie.

Public Enemies was... compromised. Beautifully scripted, acted, and shot... just a terrible choice to go with the digital video look. Failed as a visual experiment, just looked like a cheap and ugly format that wasn't in any way cohesive with the cinematic framings and film language. Subsequently it's visually a poor second to Boardwalk Empire.

That sounds incredibly decent.
I may see it for that.
But I've not heard much anything positive about it. :|

Isn't Boardwalk Empire also filmed in digital ?

Or not everything is digitally filmed these days :o ?

To me, this is just stupid. I get that they are trying to be sympathetic to the victim's families... but at the same time, do they really think that this movie will be what makes those people feel horrible? they lost loved ones in a horrific way... they won't get over this any time soon, and seeing a movie that was shot well before the massacre isn't going to all of a sudden make them sad.

Yeah, I agree. It's pretty silly. It'd be like digitally editing out the World Trade Center in movies pre-2001.

Pretty much.

Playing Devil's Advocate though, do they have a choice that doesn't involve MAJOR financial setback ? Apart from the obvious controversy and negative feedback it would generate.
