The Pirates! Band of Misfits

CHARLES. FUCKING. DARWIN.

Sure, I could talk about the stellar animation, the great voice cast, and the wonderfully crazy humor, but everything in my review comes back to Charles Fucking Darwin. The folks at Aardman Animation made a film so completely removed from reality, only to put an actual historical figure in there. And then they made said historical figure into a spineless and horny idiot with more screen time than the actual pirate rivals!

For everything that the film did right, it was completely and totally doomed by that one godawful creative choice. Of course, making a parrot the MacGuffin instead of a treasure or a map didn't help either.

I have. Several times. I was even talking about it with The Movie Dude a few pages back. I just wanted to hear (read?) Godziller's thoughts on the movie.

Uh, I gotta agree pretty much a 100% with Roger Ebert here. First, its style annoyed me. It was obviously homaging (or parodying it, maybe) Amélie's style and was really distracting for a huge chunk of the movie. We aren't given a good explanation as to why these two should even be together or withstand each other's destructive impulses so much. Its logic doesn't make much sense either. Does it want to be realistic? Magically realistic? The movie never seems to decide.

Wow just wow. I had seen this when it came out and although I liked it a great deal, I hadn't really been impressed with it until now. Affleck's direction although not perfect surpasses the work of many veteran filmmakers. He knows how to get great performances out of his actors, how to handle tone, how to put us with the actors. Stunning work. Not just that, but along with Aaron Stockard, he has written a great screenplay with a great, gut wrenching story from the Dennis Lehane novel. There are so many layers to the characters and the story. 2007 was a wonderful year for film.

Still probably the weakest of the Marvel Studios films, but I enjoy it. Some of the deleted scenes are really good too, primarily the ones that flesh out Doc Samson and General Ross.

I've been a fan of The Who since I was like twelve and I've been meaning to watch this since then. Ten years later, I finally got my wish and well, I can't say I was disappointed because I wasn't expecting too much. It's a good film. It reflects the best aspects of the album (or rock opera) it's based on by capturing subcultures, adolescence very well and telling a story that ends up feeling epic and soulful in a way few films and albums can. I guess it's major flaw is that if you already know the story, you can be pretty sure where it's going to go, so there are no surprises along the way. And the movie kind of maintains a distance from its characters that makes it a bit difficult to connect with them. Also, considering how much Sting's character is admired, I was surprised he didn't get more screentime. He deserved it. He's understood but not really felt and I think that was the problem with the movie. But when the movie does make you feel, damn, it hurts.

It was a good film with some pretty great things in it, but only a good flick at the end of the day.

I think he was a little bit better in Hot Fuzz, though.

I'm inclined to agree.
I also prefer Hot Fuzz over this one.

Also

V for Vendetta - 8.5/10

Now, I have not read the GN. But I plan to right now.
But I like the movie.
First time I saw it was when it first came out. I was like... 12.
So most of it was like *woosh* Right over my head.
I rather like it now.

^You did it right, I saw the movie before I read the GN. I felt it was a better decision, I ended up loving the GN more than I thought I would (it's my favorite Alan Moore work) and I still appreciate the movie.

Having V For Vendetta as a favorite comic and still liking the movie is pretty much like loving Super Mario and still liking the movie with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo.

V For Vendetta is an alright movie, but not an especially good adaptation. I'd say it's fair to like both, though.

lol I've come to terms with this shit.
I recognize that its a bad movie. I'll rip it apart worse than MST3K.
But I also have a fun time watching it.
*shrug*

I'm cool with that.

I watched this tonight, and it's just as funny the second time around. Made me participate in some Kung Fu time... well, Tae Kwon Do time... but close enough.
