6.5/10

Despite my love for all things 80's, this movie just doesn't cut it.
Not even as an 80's tribute. Instead the whole fact its set in the 80's is largely irrelevant.
Although before I smash it any further, Topher Grace is the ideal 80's teen protagonist.
He just fits. But nobody else does.
Anna Faris has her moments, but...
this movie feels un-eighties.
The humor is un-eighties, the...
I mean they try too hard. Every single piece of music in the movie has to be a popular 80's song.
And I do mean every.
There are plenty of funny moments, but they aren't wholy creative and a LOT of the humor just falls flat.
Some of my favorite comedies are from that era. This movie doesn't even remotely have a handle on the same kind of humor. Dan Fogler is annoying as fuck, but surprisingly he gets the lion's share of the actual funny bits.
Without him... this movie wouldn't have even been a comedy.
And maybe it shouldn't have been. Maybe a coming of age drama would've been better.
Cause Topher and Teresa Palmer have excellent chemistry, even if their arc is so predictable.
Though I wonder if thats the whole point.
Had this movie been made back then, no doubt the climax would've been wildly popular. The movie may have even gone on to be a cult classic. But as it is, it fails to be competant as an 80's throwback, it fails to be a straight up comedy, and it fails to fully succeed in any actual direction. Its okay here, its okay there.
I've said before that 'such and such' movie "flirts with greatness", but for all the raw potential Take Me Home Tonight had, it never even gets up the balls to flirt. Its stuck behind the crowd at the party staring at the girl, but never making a move.

Such a shame. Topher was pretty great. Palmer was good. Michael Biehn as Topher's dad was awesome.
But beyond that... pure squandered potential.
The best compliment I can level at this movie, is that it was entertaining. Despite not being good, it kept my attention for two hours. It was lightweight enough, I'd even stick with it until the next commercial if I ran into on TV.

*shrug*

if you like 80s stuff, Hot Tub Time Machine is a pretty good 80s based comedy.

Great acting and camerawork. Winterbottom's desire to capture things as realistically as possible is evident and appreciated here. But the story lacks any drive of sorts and too many narrative threads are left up in the air, not to mention that the characters are kind of despicable.

This is now your fifth time seeing it?

Unless he pirated it... where is he getting the money to see it this often?

Same, apart from the time I got a nice quality rip of Iron Man 2

Just watched The Guard, pretty good.

Prostitution.

I've seen it four times. But no, I'm not a prostitute. Whenever I try to solicit people, they just say, "Hey, man! I could be using this money to see The Avengers again!"

slightly bad pacing, a slightly painful soundtrack and a slightly incoherent plot maybe? I'm not saying it's a bad film, but by gum am I saying it's over rated.

I love the soundtrack, the pacing is fine, and the plot is pretty straightforward.

it might be just my taste in music but I felt the director chose the soundtrack for the sole purpose of annoying the audience, it's the main reason I don't really want to watch it again, although I'll probably be told by someone to watch it again to like it. perhaps I should seek out that leaked screener that had a different soundtrack that I heard about.
the pacing is an issue because it feels like a series of striking events held together by meagre string,
and I'll admit some parts of the plot are straightforward, but it's how the plot ties the different elements together that makes it incoherent.

Just admit you've never seen Drive and have never heard of the punisher... right now.

Maybe you really don't like old-school electro :o ?

Everyone I've talked to about the movie likes the soundtrack very much, but I've never asked someone who doesn't like that type of music, maybe this is your case ?

To be honest, I also have to disagree and..............and............support NiteOwl.

It's as straightforward as crime movies get, it's just that it's presentation is meant to offer a unique experience, even though I think it's unfair to refer to Drive as "mere exploitation" or "an exercise in style" as some have called it.

it's not so much the old school electro as it is the synth-pop that annoys me,

Well if it was mere exploitation, I can't say it'd be MORE violent, like on a slider scale, but it would've been way more action packed in the back half. Possibly really taking off with the hammer gimmick.
I like it just as is, and I actually really like the soundtrack.
It kinda recently got me into nu-retro electro and stuff.
Like, all my favorite artists' from that genre which I'm a bit hooked on at the moment is in my sig there.
Including Kavinsky who did 'Nightcall' and College who did 'A Real Hero'.
So, in fact Avatar here is the only person who I know who's seen it and didn't dig the music.
Aside from random haters around the interwebs.
