this is slightly appropriate since I just heard there has been a shooting at the midnight showing of TDKR by a gas-masked gunman in Denver, Colorado, 14 dead 50 injured....!!!!!

The US is still clearly a worse place to be than Canada as far as gun deaths go.

Want to hear a freaky coincidence? Apparently one of the victims of the shooting was in Toronto on the day of the shopping mall shooting. She was actually sitting in the food court and started to get a funny feeling (she wrote about it on her blog). So she got up and went outside to get some fresh air, moments before the shooting started. I mean, what are the odds?

Stuff like this shooting gets me paranoid. You have a massive shooting during the opening of one of the most anticipated movies of the year. It takes place in Colorado, site of one of the most infamous shooting tragedies in U.S history. It makes me feel like everything is orchestrated. Obama and Romney will talk about it during their campaigns, it will become some big issue over the next month or so. Obama as the Dark Knight, Romney as Bane (or Bain, if you prefer). Obama will win the election (and the Dark Knight rises!).

Sorry to go into conspiracy theorist mode, but I have somewhat of an interest in this stuff.

Horrifying what happened... If countries (especially the US) don't tighten their gun laws now it's ridiculous. Otherwise we'll just have more and more lunatics, Anders Breiviks etc. doing these things.

We can debate all day about gun laws, Ninjet. And the time for that will surely come. But not today. Not when the tragedy is still so fresh.

Why the hell not? Are we just supposed to mourn the victims like we always do and not actually do something to prevent this type of thing from re-occurring? We won't, of course. We almost never do. We're an idiotic country that doesn't learn from its tragedies.

Well, Michael Moore has pretty much implied in all of his filmography that Canada is "paradise", so if he read that I'd imagine that's what he would respond.

Surely Britain is,
strict gun control
public healthcare
aren't they like his 2 favourite things?

Look at him, greasey double cheeseburgers are his favorite thing.

Yeah, he had a gas mask on because he opened with tear gas, the news is saying, so I don't think he was going for a Bane vibe, i think he was going for a tactical vibe.

Still, this is a horrible day.

And for this to happen at a Batman screening of all things just makes it more sickening and weird, if that's even possible. It makes me wonder if the shooter did that on purpose or if any large gathering was the same to him.

Incidentally, I propose the thread be split so there's one place to talk about the movie and another to talk about the tragedy.

I'd like to rage against both of them, just not at the same time. And one much more than the other, obviously.

But what realistically could have been done to prevent such a thing from happening? When you sit down to watch a movie in a theater, you're not thinking someone is going to come in and shoot everyone. So where does that leave you? Installing metal detectors all over the place? Banning guns altogether? Not gonna happen. Plus, this is a problem that was always there, it just took another tragedy like this for people to say "Oh yeah, the guns, we gotta do something about those guns!".

I agree. I think that the fact we can't even talk about the movie without bringing the tragedy is frustrating and only gives that asshole more cred than he deserves.

Which is why this type of thing should have been examined seriously before. Back when the shooting involving Gabrielle Giffords happened and before that. Tighter gun control laws can help remedy the decay in our society even if they can't help remedy the decay of peoples' minds. Who needs automatic weapons? Why should people be allowed to acquire those? And why do people with a clear history of mental illness acquire guns so easily? From what I hear, the shooter's mother knew all about her son. It really doesn't take much to see the warning signs and do something about it. And more effectively linking the restriction of guns and mental illness in a legal sense can prevent this type of thing from happening.

There's plenty to be done.

Were all his guns legally bought?

We don't know yet. But even if they weren't, there's precedent for people with mental illness legally acquiring guns in the recent past.

I certainly agree that we should talk about it, just not now. Wait until the corpses are cold in the ground, for pity's sake.

There are precious few moments in life when we can all come together as decent human beings and join in some shared emotion. Let's just take a moment to remember how this feels and to join in solidarity for those who need it.
