Okay, back on topic here, folks.

I'm personally curious about the work of Mike Mignola. Any opinions in here about his work?

His Hellboy graphic novels are really great. Although the movie was good, I don't think it does a good job (nor can it, really) of showing how huge and mythological Hellboy's story is. Its really epic and spans several decades and makes several references to numerous mythologies. Plus, Hellboy is just a really great character that you geniunely grow to love with each story. I'm also a huge Lovecraft fan, and Mignola definitely makes it clear in his stories that Lovecraft had a big influence.

Hellboy is basically his pride and joy in this world. Loved the film that they made, though, and I'm glad that it's finally in production after all this time.

I assume you're referring to the sequel.

Yes, I enjoyed the original movie as well. That's why I asked about the comics.

Yes. The sequel was the film I was referring to.

A fine viewing experience it is too! :D

I just finished reading Watchmen a few days ago and now I'm thirsty for more masterpiece graphic novels. Can anyone advise me what to read next? Is V For Vendetta any good?

ps: I'm looking for limited original GNs, which means no Batman.

Well, you've come to the right thread. I suggest you read the previous three pages for ideas.

I can personally vouch for the quality of Sandman. If you haven't read it yet, do so immediately. Stardust is also very good, though I'm not sure if you could classify that as a graphic novel. And if you're in the mood for a grueling yet rewarding piece of Alan Moore material, check out From Hell (but do yourself a favor and skip the movie).

Aside from all that, you can find many other and possibly better options in the previous pages.

But trust me on Sandman.

I've been told about Niel Gaiman and Sandman before and now you've made me want to read Sandman so I'll try that out. As for From Hell, I read what its about and it doesn't seem like the kind of stuff I like. Thank you for these recommendations.

Personally, I love "V for Vendetta." I highly recommend it! Don't be influenced by the movie, the book was much better.

Yeah I've noticed that...although I liked the movie as well.

So did I. It's a good movie, but the book is even better.

The book is always better than the movie ;)

Ironically, reading Watchmen and other deconstructionist superhero books (The Dark Knight Returns, Kingdom Come) back in school have pretty much turned me off the standard cape-and-tights fare (too juvenile and stagnant), and I've been reading nothing but so-called literary or alternative graphic novels since.

My favorite artists include Jason Lutes (his Berlin series is amazing), Daniel Clowes (Ghost World is good, David Boring is better), Adrian Tomine (his new book Shortcomings is stellar), and I just finished a pair of Yoshihiro Tatsumi books, edited by Tomine for Drawn & Quarterly.

Basically, I've tried to check out anything not put out by Marvel, DC, Image or other mainstream publishers, and I'm seldom disappointed by what I find.

I haven't read Y:The Last Man but i've heard it was really good. I don't even know what it's about exactly. Would you guys recommend it? Also, would you guys recommend We3 and The Nocturnals?

Just finished reading Tomine's "Summer Blonde". Angst-ridden, quiet little stories. Similar to Auster. I'll be looking out for more of his stuff at the local comic library.

Seriously looking forward to Charles Burns' "Black Hole". Gawd his stuff gives me the creepy creeps! (In a very weird and wonderful way, of course!)
