Has anyone else seen photos of this Mars crater?

Image

When I first saw this picture, I thought of the last few panels in Issue IX of Watchmen. But then I saw this photo, and see that it even comes pre-formed with its own "Watchmen" blood stain!

Very cool. And a little creepy.

Hadn't seen the second one.

Life obviously imitates Art.

I think I'll borrow it for an Avatar

Moore and Gibbons discovered this somewhat pertinent geographical feature by sheer happy (literally) coincidence, having already decided to send their characters to Mars beforehand.

And just to prove that uncanny Watchmen synchronicity is still alive and well, check out the source of that photo I've posted: the Mars Orbiter Camera built by the California Institute of Technology and a certain Malin Space Science Systems.
Just who is the actress who'll get to 'visit' that very same spot on film...?

OK, that's cool.

But are you saying that Moore and Gibbons knew about this crater before they wrote/drew the issue? If so, I guess the coincidence is a little less startling (but cool nonetheless).

Alan Moore was also on the grassy knoll one fateful day in Dallas. Hurm.

Of course, the bloodstain is on the wrong side, but the coincidence is startling nonetheless.

Just to ask the obvious question, I wonder if Snyder will shoot the Mars crater as it appears in the photo or as it appears in the graphic novel. Me, I'd prefer the photo, just for subtlety's sake. How about you all?

I agree completely. I'd love to see the actual crater in the film.

And yes, it's on the wrong side -- but (as you can see in dandreiberg's new avatar) it's a perfect mirror image. The angle is even perfect! It's downright eerie.

I'm hoping that he makes it as close to the real thing as he can. It certainly looks close enough to a smiley face and it's actually where the scene in the comic took place. But I can see them doing some tweaks to it to make it fit in with whatever look they end up going for on Mars.

Peculiar coincidences.

Especially as the early Viking orbiter images don't show any "stain" at all!

The new Mars Express (2006) hi-res images show the place in detail. :).

Almost unbelievable serendipity.

This is proof of "Intelligent Design," right? ;)
