To say that I know exactly how you feel would be an atrocious understatement...

I don't think any of us know how much of an impact this trailer had. It may have had the same impact as the first three-hundred trailer.

Well surely this thread is an indication? And the reception from the online media has been excellent. And I've heard the ComicCon footage was about as well-received as the Iron Man stuff last year (which was very high).
It's hard to judge against other films, but we know that interest in this film has been multiplied by a massive number...
You can see it all over the net...

The only downside of this is that there will be a ton of hipsters promoting Rorschach as some kind of pop hero, like what happened with V for Vendetta.

Or we could be seeing spin-off learning books. "Ozy teaches you decision-making!"

Ugh. Yeah, unfortunately, you're right. There are already people who think that just because he's cool and has one-liners, he's right. They just sort of gloss over the "he's a right-wing nutjob" aspect.

Actually, that's slightly awesome.

Welcome to the boards, by the way!

I also work at a bookstore, and the trade sold out almost instantly after the trailer hit. In fact we sold so many copies that we just received a fresh batch of Watchmen TPBs that went promptly to the #8 spot on our paperback fiction best-sellers display at the front of the store! This is the only time I can recall that a graphic novel (other than Marjane Satrapi's great book Persepolis) has made the top 10 in-store best-sellers, so it's all very exciting. At my store, I'm considered the comics specialist, so I'm trying to come up with some good ways of parlaying the Watchmen excitement into sales for other graphic novels we have in stock...

Display other Alan Moore stuff alongside Watchmen? Y'know, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion TVM -- pretty much any time Moore comes out with something new or I make any display even tangentially connected to comics (and there's been a lot of them lately...), I make sure at least *something* by Moore gets a featured spot on it, so that's always a given. Last year, I made an awesome three-tiered LoEG:Black Dossier display that featured the LoEG graphic novels and film (I know, the movie's awful, but at least it gave regular folks a point of reference...), other works by Moore (specifically From Hell, VfV, and Watchmen), and a couple of rows of classic literary works that were referenced in Black Dossier.

I guess I'm thinking primarily about building displays that really reach out beyond the fanboys and boho intellectuals who gather online, to people who might pick it up just because it's on the best-seller shelf. There's actually a lot of people who confine their book purchases only to things they see on the best-sellers, so I figure if somebody who might ordinarily pick up Stephen King or Clive Cussler (or even more literary writers like Khaled Hosseini or Ken Follett) picks up Watchmen, we might need to do a little bit of outreach to guide them to other great works of graphic fiction that they might have otherwise been unaware of. Anyway, just thinking out loud...

That sounds like a very attractive, enticing display. I especially like the idea of the books the Black Dossier references being worked in.

Man, I've gotta move.

Or open my own bookstore.

Knew I'd get you to say something positive one of these days, BF. ;) Thanks for the kind word!

Yeah, I figured that it'd be a waste to do a LoEG display without tying in the original source material for the characters. In much the same way that Snyder keeps saying that he wants to make a feature-length commercial for the WM graphic novel, I think Alan Moore's primary motivation in doing LoEG was to make a comic-book advert for classic literature.

Nice idea to give LoEG, and it's derivitive sources so much space.

Mmm. I haven't read Black Dossier yet. I nearly jumped when I misread what you wrote and thought is was about LEGO: Black Dossier. Now there's a game I'd like to play. :P

I went into town today and stopped by two bookstores. They had about 20 copies of Watchmen apiece, both in the graphic novel section and at the front of the store, near the registers.

It was a beautiful thing.

Because of the movie, Watchmen is now outselling Naruto.

Only 9 Japanese titles in top 20; #2's Naruto Vol. 30 makes way for Watchmen

The ICv2 retail news source reports on the BookScan Top 20 Graphic Novels for July in the American retail market, and for the first time in recent months, Japanese manga titles do not dominate the chart. Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto volumes 30 takes the #2 spot as Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen classic rises to #1 on the strength of the movie trailer that is attached to The Dark Knight film. That film's success also pushed five Batman titles into the top 20.

I know how a lot of you guy's feel!

i make obscure Watchmen references here and there, and everyone says "what the hell are you talking about?" And when i got my tattoo everyone was like "what/who the shit is that??" I got tired of explaining it so i just said "3-6-9..you'll know"

It's nice to see lots of people getting into the comic, but i hate bandwagons

Gotta say, heard only about this glorious comic when I went to Comic Con this year. The clip they showed BLEW. ME .AWAY. I had to get my hands on this stunning piece of work.

I went to four different book retailers in the California area, sadly all sold out. Even tried to pre-order it in the store and it failed to go through. Finally just bought the darn thing from Amazon once they got another shipment in. Finished it in 3 days. My world is forever changed.

I'm jealous of all of you who read it years ago.

Like Curi just stated, welcome!

Kind of jealous of anyone reading it for the first time, actually. :)

Same here, Soup. I'm also jealous of all the people who first read the books when they came out as 12 seperate issues in 86/87 and anyone else who didn't have the ending spoiled for them before reading the book(s). When I was first learning about the plot to Watchmen almost 3 years ago on wikipedia I became a little too interested and accidentally spoiled the ending for myself. Have regretted it ever since.
