[NOTE: This post has been partially uncensored with AYB's help. It was taken from a thread in the movie section where Kevin Smith compares Watchmen to TDK. In this post, Alfonso responded to a post from AYB in a rather... controversial fashion. The whole thread was derailed after this, so I thought I'd split the thread and move any further debate on the subject to the Feedback section. --"Curiosity Inc."]

So? I didn't like them either, but people have different opinions. That doesn't make his opinion worth any less.

I also don't care about the opinions of someone who used to post every five seconds and today, replies to anything and everything. All just to get a higher post count.

Just expressing my thoughts, Curi.

EDIT:

Now I get a warning on my inbox over this!?

I don't get it. He told me I was out of line and I told him to grow a pair.

He comes from IMDB. Why the hell get upset over a comment like that. He should be used to worse! What I replied is nothing compared to some of the venom that's been spit here before. Why so serious all of a sudden?

A warning in your inbox?

Aren't those things supposed to be private?

Yeah, I've never gotten a warning in my inbox. Why does Alfonso get special treatment?

Sorry if I sounded a little high and mighty with my previous comment. It' s just what you said sounded a little out of left field. If you go back and read AYB's comment, I think it's clear he wasn't attacking you. His comments were pretty tame, yet I think you took them personally.

Still, strange you would get a warning in your inbox.

We've had off-topic posts in various threads. I can tolerate that. We've had personal attacks between each other. As much as I hate that, it's still my general policy to sit back and wait until the problem either resolves itself or goes too far.

Alfonso's post was both off-topic and a flagrant personal attack. It's like Alfonso went out of his way to trash AYB, and that's what really upsets me. His post was tactless, derogatory and uncalled for. Out of line by any standards.

Yes, I sent Alfonso a formal warning. That's what the warning system is there for. I was hoping that Alfonso and I could resolve this privately, through PMs and such, but no luck there.

So really, what upsets me comes down to this: Alfonso deliberately went a mile off-topic for no better reason than to launch personal attacks against another user in response to a perfectly civil post.

Alfonso wrote:

He may be used to worse at IMDB. But he doesn't have to be used to that kind of treatment here. You're comparing apples to oranges, Alfonso. We're totally different forums in that we at WCM.Com are trying to be more civil, more knowledgeable and better-organized than that place could ever be.

I gave you the chance to edit your earlier post, Alfonso. If you won't, then I will.

Curiosity, I know that you take your role as moderator very seriously, and that I've sometimes given you a hard time about it. I'm sure there have been times when you felt I was crossing a line, at least I hope so, because I was probably trying to. This time, though, I think it's you who might've crossed a line. It's not a line I'm comfortable with.

In the case of Alfonso and AYB, AllYourBasic had the opportunity to respond back (which he undoubtedly would have done anyway) to the usually good-natured and amiable Alfonso, if he so desired. Alfonso might have had a change of heart, and apologized. We'll never know, because you took all of those options off of the table.

I chose not to respond publicly. I PMed Alfonso that he was out of line and reported his post. Question my actions if you want to.

this whole debacle is silly... for as much as i disagree with alfonso about kevin smith, what i find more disturbing than his comments is Curi's willingness to censor comments and remove them entirely. authoritarian indeed. and this has been done before by him....so....

i dunno....i dont mean to start this whole discussion we had about censoring a year ago or so. but i just cant stand for censoring comments of anykind. Denounce them yes, unacceptable and uncivil, yes, warning a member yes. but going back and deleting the comments, i say NO. (its what the terrorists want DAMNIT!! for us to turn on eachother.)

in the end, my point is that people need to calm down, dont take it so personal, and dont get all butt hurt because some faceless asshole called you an asshole in the internet. is it worth being upset over really?

Okay. It seems to me that PMing Alfonso was an admirable first step in handling the situation by yourself, but what did you hope would happen by reporting him?

Whatever your reason, you're not the one with the power to delete people's posts, AYB. You're not the problem. Not this time, anyway.

When I PM'd AYB, I promised that if Alfonso didn't edit his post, I would. I repeated that promise to Alfonso when I PM'd him. When I finally did edit the post, I thought I was simply keeping my word. In retrospect, that was a pretty stupid thing to promise. I wish I could take that edit back, but I can't. For that, I deeply apologize to Alfonso and to everyone else here.

However, while I do regret my actions, I don't regret my reasons. We've had little grudge matches here before, but I can't recall if they've ever derailed a thread so completely at any point in the past several months. AYB and I accelerated the process, I freely admit, but it all began when one of our longtime members flew off the handle and derailed a thread just to respond inappropriately to a civil response.

Alfonso claimed that he was simply voicing his opinions. That's been a big issue here lately, what constitutes valid opinions and when debates have gone too far. It took me way too long to find that line, but Alfonso drew it for me. I didn't know how to respond, but all of you -- including Alfonso -- have taught me. Or perhaps reminded me.

Let it be known that this can't happen again.

An interesting question. What were you hoping would happen, AYB?

I dunno - in retrospect, I acted like a kid crying to his parents
Here's the first part of Alfonso's post if you want to uncensor

The second part was something like "or cashing in..."

Well, if it was up to me I wouldn't have warned anyone or deleted any posts.

Censorship though? What Curi deleted was just directed hate. No point was being made, no ideas erased.

Was it the right thing to do as moderator... I'll leave you to debate that.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, should really leave the ad hominem insults out of their posts, and be man (or woman) enough to....

NOT FEED THE TROLLS

(not saying anyone was a troll in this specific situation, but I'm sure you all catch my drift.)

I think this topic is worth discussing because it's something to take into account. How these sort of situations should be handled.

I think you could probably accuse quite a number of people here of the same behavior. There are a few members here who I usually agree with when it comes to views or matters pertaining to the movie or graphic novel, yet disagree with when it comes to how they treat other members. I've seen on more than one occasion, people verbally insult one another. The usual case of action is to either suggest to them to get back on topic, or close the thread.

Curiosity Inc. wrote:

In my mind anything is fair once the conversation (or more often, the debate) starts to get personal. Once people start calling each other "idiot" and "retard", then I don't see a problem with intervening. Maybe not out right censoring comments, but a request, to either individual, via PM's, to knock it off. That's all I can think of.

Also, I hope Alfonso doesn't take it that some of us are ganging up on him or decides not to post here again. His behavior just seemed out of character.
