As in atmosphere....
I know Tim Burton does some dark stuff...but i reckon...these are pretty good for that sort of feel...

The Crow
Seven
Dark City

eraserhead and blue velvet would be way up there... as with most of lynch's work - no matter how it looks on the surface.

bad timing would probably top the list though... insanely dark... and a complete change in tone.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Requiem
A Clockwork Orange

And while we're at at, the original Hans Christian Andersen version of 'The Little Mermaid' was fucked up. As a matter of fact, the same can be said of most of the Grimm tales as well...

Tim Burton's films are fairy tales, come on.

Michael Haneke's Funny Games (the original) would be in the running.

Depends what you mean by "dark" in terms of atmosphere.

Eraserhead has an oppressive, almost suffocating atmosphere to it - which successfully causes you to empathise with the lead character, Henry.

The Grapes of Wrath has been said to be a really depressing film, considering it's subject matter.
The City of Lost Children and Cronos are both atmospherically dark for differring reasons.
Mind you, I count Pan's Labyrinth as a wonderfully dark film too, as far as grow-up faerie tales go :)

Mulholland Drive. I have few nights of bizarre nightmares after I watched that.

I would have to say Wolf Creek, that was quite dark, it gave me this horrible feeling of being trapped, or knowing that escape was impossible. The Omen has a similar feel for me (both the original and the remake)

I don't really remember these kinds of things in great detail, but I'd say that Naked (1993) was the darkest one. There is probably not even a moment of cheer in it and it's just 2 hours worth of two guys abusing others, both physically and mentally.

Raising Cain was the name of that movie.

I would have to say the darkest movie in terms of themes would be Battle Royale.

ah thanks oreodogvomit (wtf is up with your name?)

i have to agree, battle royal is dark in theme, if not traditionally dark in a cinematographical sense. if you want dark japanese movies in a more visual way, Casshern, and anime movies like Akira and Metropolis have very dark visual feels to them

I have had this screen name for about 12 years. The story behind it isn't that interesting but since you asked here it goes. I was visiting my sister and her husband in Bloomington, IL. I ate a few oreo cookies out of the bag and left them on the kitchen counter before we left to go somewhere (can't really remember). We returned to find that one or both of my sister's bichon frises somehow scaled the sides and pulled the whole package of cookies down, consuming the entire thing. When we returned there were two HUGE steaming piles of black, chunky puke on the carpet! We found the bag and my sister said "ewww, oreo dog vomit!" to which my reply was "that would make a great screen name." I never knew so much vomit could come from such small dogs.

And there you have it.

I don't know about the darkest, but the reality TV show Solitary has some dark moments. People put themselves through all sorts of torture just for money, and with no human contact and very little food and sleep for 2 weeks, they begin to break down psychologically. They start to go crazy and it's kinda disturbing to watch. On the flip side, it has some very funny moments is in my top 3 for the best reality tv shows ever, with Kitchen Nightmares and Hell's Kitchen also being up there.

I don't know if I would call it dark, but No Country For Old Men makes me feel like I'm at the will of someone else, and my life is nothing but an object dangling on a string.

Dead Man's Shoes.
I was inspired to buy it after seeing it on IFC, but the second time I tried to watch it I realized how bleak it is. I agree with poster who said Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. Another laughfest.
