The supermodel Jordan auditioned to be James Bond a while back!

Easy. Recast Kirk and crew just like they did... but stay true to canon. Why throw out 40 years of canon? Just so some director can do Star Trek "his way." If he wanted to do that, he should come up with a new idea and not spew diarrhea on an established franchise.

Exactly! Or, even make a DS9 movie, make a Titan movie, make something in the FUTURE of star trek. That's what Star Trek is about, moving into the bold, new, unexplored future (almost like a FINAL FRONTIER!!!! if you will), not the "boring seen it before let's rehash what was good before" state hollywood is in

Oy, I just saw the trailer, bootleg and off-screen. Still good quality though. Anyway, if you thought the new Watchmen trailer left much to be desired, wait 'til you have this stinker to pick through. Blagh.

Just got back from Quantum of Solace. Obviously, I saw the Star Trek trailer, and I have to say that it looks good.

No, wait, let me rephrase that: It looks good. The Enterprise looked good, the cast looked good, the warp effect looked good, even the brief glimpse of the transporter effect looked good. But will the movie itself be good? Well, the jury's still out on that, as far as I'm concerned.

This movie fell prey to the same editing snafus as the recent Watchmen trailer. Anything of substance was cut down to a few seconds, to heighten the mainstream flash while skimping on the fanboy meat. That said, there are still a few glaring errors.

First of all, the Enterprise. Why the hell is it being built on solid ground? How are they getting it up in the black? Oh, and it's glaringly obvious that the Enterprise will be completed during the course of the movie, which likely means that Pike will be the first Enterprise captain instead of the second. It's a minor detail that only a fanboy would care about, but you'd think it'd be important when the movie is all about how the fucking thing began!

Next, the sexuality. When I heard that they were sexing the franchise up a bit, I figured that there would be a few chaste cut-aways with maybe a bit of shadowplay. Now, let's be honest. Kirk was getting laid every other week and Uhura was always a character with beauty and brains in equal measure. Besides that, it's been confirmed that a few Orion slave girls will appear in this movie, and you don't need hardcore Trekkie credentials to know that there's only one thing Orion slave girls are good for. So, I hear that Abrams and crew might be pushing that envelope a bit. Not unreasonable, I thought. But then I saw Uhura take her top off in the trailer and it's not some view in shadow from the back. She keeps her bra on, but it's fully lit and from the front. Granted, the trailer was cut in such a way that it might look like a bigger deal than it really is. Still, I've got to question the judgment on this.

Finally, there's Abrams himself. I barely know anything about him, so I can't comment on the strength of his resume. However, I am familiar with Lost's reputation for bringing up an endless number of secrets and clues with few resolutions, if any. After seeing Fringe since its inception, I can see a similar trend arising. Same goes for Cloverfield. This leads me to assume -- tentatively -- that Abrams is a storytelling hack who turns plot holes into cliffhangers by leaving them unresolved for stretches of time. I'd be happy to be proven wrong. Also, Fringe and Star Trek are both written and exec produced by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who, remember, did brief rewrites on Watchmen). I've come to respect the pair for all the fan service they did during the production on the Transformers movie. I've gone on record defending them in this very forum. But if Star Trek crashes and/or if Fringe goes nowhere, I will take back every nice thing I ever said about them. Ditto for Abrams.

Long story short, I just don't know. The movie will undoubtedly look good, but I don't know if it's what the Trek franchise needs. After next May, the franchise will either reclaim its throne as a force to be reckoned with or it will crash and burn worse than ever before. I'm not seeing a lot of middle ground here. Unfortunately, even if it does tank, it still won't be enough to crash Abrams' career, and that's the greatest injustice of all.

Curi: Abrams directed the pilot episode from Lost, and (as far as I know) sometimes shares ideas with the writers. But Lindelof and Cuse are the ones that pull the whole "unsuspected plot twist and unresolved mysteries" thing on us.

I agree that he likes mysteries (like you said, Cloverfield is an example) but I don't think he is a hack, like you said.

According to imdb he wrote 83 episodes. He also wrote Armageddon (oh dear).
I enjoyed M:I:3 though. A lot more fun and a lot better than Mission Impossible II: A New Haircut, and a bit better than the first imo. It's not bad to beat De Palma!
Even though I've never liked Star Trek, I'm kind of rooting for this film to go well...it'd make Sci-Fi popular again....

Actually, no, you were right. Although Abrams has writing credits in those episodes, I think he is mostly just credited as a creator. I checked Wikipedia to be sure, and you're right. For individual episodes he is not listed as a writer. In fact, I think he's only written maybe 3 or 4 episodes. He is mostly just the shows producer. Besides, people have long since stopped complaining about the show, and it's regularly praised (Hey, it's my favorite show).

Without turning this into another "Wire thread", yeah it's the one show I still get excited to watch.

So, yeah, Star Trek....cool.

Dude, Trek paved the way for so much. I think I have to join him the only things I like more than Watchmen are Star Wars and Star Trek.

And I didn't get to see the trailer because my theatre didn't play that the new Watchmen trailer or Transformers 2 before QoS, They played the original Watchmen trailer and a bunch of kiddie movie trailers... I was pissed.

My dad told me a joke once: What's the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek?

Star Wars is fictional. ;) I always loved that one.

By the way, I hear that the trailer will be online on Monday. I'll be sure to link to it, if someone doesn't beat me to it.

I dont really know about Star Trek. No one I know likes it either. But I was impressed with the trailer I saw (instead of Watchmen for some reason) at the QoS premeire last night. IMHO Star Wars kicks Star Trek ass but idk about Trek so ...

Saw the trailer in front of Bond tonight (in the same boat as everyone else, it seems, I did not see the Watchmen trailer in the theater). I have to say, it looks ridiculous. My boyfriend and I turned and looked at each other and said, "Looks like another bad Star Trek movie."

And I said, "Yeah, but I still kind of want to see Simon Pegg as Scotty."

Simon Pegg improves all things.

I have to admit to being interested in this. The original series is the best in my opinion. I don't feel that I'm in any danger of being offended by this movie, no matter how badly it neglects the canon. I'll get a strong dose of 60s Trek aesthetic, a lot of mindlessly fun action, and maybe some "Balance of Terror" style cat and mouse, and I'll be happy with that. I won't even feel bad about giving Paramount money for it. This franchise has survived the moronic refusal to honor Roddenberry's dream of constantly seeking out the new and the interesting, and it has been rehashed and quibbled into dust. It's never going to die, no matter how dry it gets. Like McCoy stepping onto a transporter platform, you just have to hope for the best.

EDIT:
I just noticed something.

AICN has some pretty pictures here, and you can see the new trailer in HD here.

Thanks for posting that link to the trailer. I made some stills. I think that although it's supposed to be on Vulcan, the shot with Spock's parents is of the site where Kirk fought the Gorn.
