We have threads for the DC Direct stuff, the Art of Dave Gibbons stuff, the Titan Books, and apparel from Hot Topic.

But, of course, there will be more. Today I saw a sales sheet with the following...

Lunchboxes (at least 2 different ones... I saw a Rorschach one and a Manhattan one on the sales sheet. Each comes with a themed thermos)

Buttons (at least 12 different ones)

Keychains (5-6 plastic ones, 2 pewter metal ones)

A Metal Flask (w/ "Who Watches The Watchmen?")

Beanie hats (Watchmen logo & Doomsday clock w/ "The End is Nigh")

Baseball hat (blue with Dr. Manhattan symbol)

Metal Lighter (w/ "Who Watches The Watchmen?")

Wallet (w/ "Who Watches The Watchmen?")

I imagine that the lunchboxes at least will garner more than a few guffaws from folks. But, in any event... WATCHMEN merchandise is coming. And there'll be a lot of it.

(Incidentally, the initial DC Direct item... the 1:6 Manhattan figure... should be shipping in less than 2 weeks)

Scooby Doo lunchboxes have consistently failed to spark debates about the moral value of genocide.

Lunchboxes.

They're going to manufacture and sell Watchmen lunchboxes.

Some 8-year-old kid will be walking into an elementary school cafeteria with a lunchbox featuring a grungy, blood-soaked vigilante; a sociopathic mass murderer with nipples on his costume and/or a giant, naked, blue man; all from an R-rated movie adapted from a mature graphic novel.

It's official. They've gone too far. There is no way that WB can authorize Watchmen lunchboxes or backpacks and then say with a straight face that they're not marketing towards kids.

Not to try and justify it, but these are not the type of lunchboxes that kids use these days and you will not see them at Target, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, etc. These are the full 70's/80's retro METAL lunchboxes that have become popular with the "hip" crowd that shops at places like Hot Topic and Spencer, which is pretty much the only place where you will see these.

Still. WATCHMEN lunchboxes is a  concept.

Manhattan: It is just a moral lapse...

Laurie: LUNCHBOXES are a moral lapse?!

All joking aside that seems rather...hurm...sick. I want the Rorschach one

The coolness of the flask sort of cancels out some of the fruitiness of the lunchbox.

Out of the twelve pins, I guess they decided against making the one that's actually in the movie itself.

Maybe Smiley World Ltd. wouldn't look too kindly on it.

This 'newer' art style of Eddie Blake makes him look like Gomez Addams...Hell, I have a mental image of Rorschach as Lerch now. Dammit!

That's pretty much what I surmise as well. Bummer. Oh well, there are always the fan-made ones on eBay and elsewhere (some of which are pretty good).

That's exactly it. Hell, just re-watch the "Watchmen Babies" episode of The Simpsons. "My name's Strawberry. My purse is a lunchbox."

The cool thing about most consumers of pop culture is that they have no idea what they're buying. My friend got a Kafka oven mitt, and he just uses it to smash bugs.

My guess is that this stuff and the Hot Topic stuff is not "official." Maybe Warners is allowing the sale of the movie license to independent dealers who then are making their own merch up.

Ugh, I was kind of hoping they wouldn't do this much... Now I know I'll be buying way more crap than necessary...

I don't know... a lot of that stuff looks really, really Hot Topic-y.

Speaking of Hot Topic (at least my local ones), the last time I went in there to inquire about any merch, they said that they were probably going to get in some shirts/hoodies/other bits-n-bobs (as was mentioned in a different thread) and had already been shipped posters but hadn't been given the go-ahead to put them out... I guess things may start going out sometime this month.

What? No big floppy penis on the front? Hurm... maybe it'll be on the Thermos

Wait... then that'd be like putting your mouth on....

Okay, sorry
