There's been word going around that real-life figures will appear in the Watchmen movie. Richard Nixon is on the bill, obviously, but there are other figures who never appeared in the graphic novel.

Yoko Ono and John Lennon have been listed as "non-speaking roles" in a "key sequence" of the movie. Then you've got McLoughlin and Pat Buchanan of the McLoughlin Group, apparently in a debate regarding Dr. Manhattan.

How do you think these new roles will contribute to the movie? Should the movie include other figures of the era as well?

I think JFK should be cast, but that's just me.

I keep hearing word elsewhere of some planned opening credits montage featuring the great and the good of Americana down the ages which would seem to answer the celeb lookalikey casting question.

Why JFK? Unless it's so we get to see his brains blown out followed by a quick cut to Doctor Manhattan as he says, matter of factly, "D'OH."

I was thinking of Chapter IV, pg. 14, panel 3. First and foremost, it's a great image. Secondly, the exchange is quite good:

JFK: "Tell me, what's it like to be a superhero?"
Dr. Manhattan: "You should know."
JFK: *laughs*

I wouldn't be surprised if that didn't make the cut, but it'd be a nice moment for the movie, don't you think?

This exchange would be great. But, do these roles actually need to be cast, or can stock footage be manipulated like in Forrest Gump? I bet with technology today, it would look seemless.

...but expensive, I would imagine.

Hasn't Zack recently made mention of having been checking out the prosthetics for use on 'Nixon'? I guess if you can't find an actor who actually resembles a famous face from yesteryear, then good old latex and spirit gum will do.

I heard this too, as the movie takes place during a time period those people have to be recreated and they held a casting call for impersonaters. I think the Bobby Kennedy from Hoffa, although he might be older now.

Well, you can add JFK, Jr. to that list as well.

 :|

Am I to understand that the scene I described may very well be in the movie? Nice! Can't believe I predicted that off the top of my head like that.

So, are there any other real-life characters you'd like to see?

P.S. On the off chance that you hear of any other movie-related news, post it on the board or send it right over to DoomsdayClock, would you please?

No I think you may have misread my post. I said JFK, Jr.. I'm guessing his scene will be a quick non-speaking role. Maybe a recreation of that iconic scene of Lil' JFK giving his dearly departed dad a final salute as the hearse drives away.

Don't know if I'd really want to see any others added to the list seeing as how I'd like the movie to spend as much time as possible on scenes that are actually in the book.

Also, I don't think you should count on me for any other real scoops. All I had to do with the pictures (and that particular JFK, Jr. scoop) is that I happened to be a lucky fly on the right wall at the right time. I happened to be browsing Facebook at the time he posted the scoops and ran off with them eagerly ready to tell anyone I could find without stopping to think about the poor old guy.

I completely understand. You'll notice that the key word in my original post was "may." I'm just saying that if your scoop is valid and JFK Jr. is cast, is it so much of a stretch to think that JFK himself may be cast as well? And if that's the case, is it not safe to guess that said character will be featured in the scene I described?

Furthermore, I don't want to give the impression that I consider you to be some kind of mole in the production. Far as I'm concerned, a valid piece of news is a valid piece of news, regardless of which reliable source it comes from or how lucky we all were that the story broke at all.

Also, I hear what you're saying in regard to conservative use of real-life characters, especially real-life characters who weren't in the graphic novel. Hell, we have enough in the graphic novel to deal with already. However, I would advocate the use of real-life figures if it were done in such a way that it made the characters look better. The JFK scene I described, for example. Another example would be the McLoughlin Group who we will allegedly see in the movie debating Dr. Manhattan.

See what I mean?

Ah, okay. Then I apologize for my misunderstanding of your non-misunderstanding(???). Daddy Kennedy could very well join his son on the list.

I also agree with you regarding the use of additional "real-life characters". If they add something more to the already established characters or themes then I have nothing against their addition into the movie. However, I worry that the movie could become over-stuffed with references to real-life people if the list keeps growing.
