Now, you guys have read numerous complaints about Snyder's use of slow-motion from 300, and the worries that have been brought about in Watchmen. Disregard those complaints as complete utter malarkey. The slow-motion used in this film was perfect, and added to the scene to make it better, and there was clearly less slow-motion used than in 300.

Discuss?

Didn't have a problem with the slow-motion. It was used to amazing effect in the opening fight, and good to decent everywhere else.

While yeah, there was quite a bit of slow-mo action in the movie, it never felt overpowering or got annoying, and a lot of times it was used on emotional or dramatic parts instead, to enhance them.

Sort of a useless thread though.

It felt unnecessary at times, but I absolutely LOVED it's use in the Blake/ Veidt fight.

not only was the slow motion tasteful, but when it was a rrrreeaaaallllllyyyyy slow pan, you could tell snyder was giving a nod to the comics medium (as well as the comic fans poring over details), and simultaneously taking advantage benefits of the film medium. it worked.

It worked to great effect. Now I feel odd when I watch a film without it.

I liked it. It wasn't overdone at all - I barely noticed it except in the opening fight. It really bugged my dad though.

Agree with promethea, it was just tastefully done. Before seeing the film I thought every time slow mo was used itd stick out and I'd think 'there zack goes again' but I honestly wasnt conscious of it, it all just mixed visually into a total feast for the eyes

I'm a slo-mo ho. Love it, always have. When my family got it's first decent VHS player, i used to slo-mo every thing i taped.. I think Snyder has taken it to a new level of niceness in Watchmen. The title sequence, obviously... I'm gonna pinpoint more in my second viewing. Tomorrow morning.

If someone was to complain about his use for slo-mo they honestly are just TRYING to find something to complain about it. Zack used it to excellent effect no doubt about it.

Not a pointless topic either, cause it was something alot of people were worried about and now we're discussing what we thought of the cinematic technique. What the forums for ;)

But yes, excellent.

Best bit of slow mo was Veidt striking the assassin. The speed ramping worked so well to increase the impact. Awesome. To think I was concerned lol.

Actually, that's the one scene where I felt the effect was overdone. Veidt's assassination attempt.

I think it's because of the visual reference (I'm sure people will say it was intentional) to Terminator 2. Not just the entrance via elevator. The killer holding a box of flowers/pizza, dropping the box, advancing menacingly, shot of footstep crushing flowers/pizza box, people screaming in slow-mo terror, an unexpected hero intervening...

I never understood why people complain about slow mo... is fucking cool. In 300, you actually get to SEE the fighting. Why would anyone want the choppy bullshit?

Honestly I didn't even notice it half the time, it just fit in really well.

Tastefully done, and not at all in-your-face. Much less than "300", and I totally understand what people were saying when they said you'd seen most of the slow mo in the film just from watching the trailers.

Also, it was used to gorgeous effect in the opening credits. Captured frozen moments in time...great stuff. :D

[NOTE: This post started its own thread, which has since been merged here. --"Curiosity Inc."]

The first time I saw the movie, when Dan started running at Veidt in slow-mo, I thought it was kinda cheesy. Then a terrible thought entered by head: "Are they going to kill Veidt after all?" I quickly reminded myself that Snyder had already promised Veidt's survival. But that half-second was scary.

I wonder if that's what Snyder was going for. Maybe he wanted audiences to think "This is it. Veidt is going to die, and it serves him right" only to be disappointed when he lives.

Didn't think it was cheesy at all, personally. Altering the conclusion a bit and having Dan witness Rorschach's death was an excellent decision, if you ask me. It added a nice element of anger to everything, and the scene where Dan is punching Veidt (while Veidt is voluntarily taking the beating) showed us the sadness Adrian feels.

Yeah, I really did like the additions that they gave to Dan at the end.

Also, when Veidt catches the bullet and pulls it out of his hand, it is a nod to the 'stigmata' seen on various saints and religious figures, like Christ (Holes in the palms, etc). What's even better, is that when he has his had on his abdomen on the ground after "being shot", he is essentially nursing the wound area where Christ was stabbed by the Spear of Longinus, even if he's just faking. They are great references to him being a messiah and a 'savior' of the people, even if it's warped and twisted.

When Dan runs at him, ready to attack, Adrian outstretches his arms, and with the "stigmata" on at least one hand, it's definitely a Christ-like message there. I'm trying to make a connection using the cut on Veidt's face after Dan punches him. It seems like it's there for more than the obvious reason. Maybe a Crown of Thorns comparison can be made as well?

I loved this, and just put it together today. Makes me want to see it again, actually.
