I don't have all of the details just yet, but Mike Sampson and Johnny Moreno just called me with this update a few minutes ago, so here's what I know so far. Being in SHOWEST, they were able to speak to many different people and apparently a WB rep told them that several "big things" would be announced during this Thursday's WB press conference regarding the next BATMAN movie and that not only is Christopher Nolan returning behind the camera, but a few other choice nuggets as well:

- The film will be titled: BATTLE FOR GOTHAM. I can't say that I'm crazy about the title, but maybe they'll change it by the time the film is released in 2011. It will apparently be the final part of the Nolan trilogy though and hopefully it will be a massive scale fight for the city...

- Johnny Depp is officially discussing the possibility of coming on board as The Riddler (apparently he and Bale got really close during the filming of Michael Mann's PUBLIC ENEMIES last year). This isn't 100% just yet, but it's close...

- TITANIC director James Cameron will apparently attend the BATTLE FOR GOTHAM press conference on Thursday, which had led to rumors about possibly bringing back the Joker in a small cameo (flashback) and get this...it would be a computer-generated version of Heath Ledger as the Joker using ultra-realistic texture-mapping and advanced personality algorithms designed by Cameron's company...

- The film will apparently be a much darker, grittier version and seems geared to feature the fall (& rise) of Gotham City, and would therefore be looking for a R-rating...

We're gonna be getting a lot more details tomorrow (or click on the link below for more specific details), so stay tuned to JoBlo.com for that, but for now, I'm pretty damn stoked about all this news, as a darker version of BATMAN including Depp and possibly even an "homage" to Ledger would be pretty damn awesome, if you ask me.

I'm not crazy about computer-generated "people" in movies, but according to many folks, James Cameron has apparently perfected "CGI human beings" for his next feature AVATAR and assured everyone that his firm would be able to re-create Ledger and his actions (respectfully) for the next film. Technology rocks!

I should have added:

There's a link provided at the bottom of the article, of a concept photo for the movie: http://www.joblo.com/newsimages1/battleforgotham.jpg

Well, so what's everyone's ideal "Batman 3"?

For me, I want it to be called "The Caped Crusader". (If it was called "The Dark Knight Returns", I would get a backflip into the Frank Miller novel.) I would like Johnny Depp as the Riddler and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin; unfortunately he's not interested in the part, but he would have been great!

As for Catwoman...well, after the horror that was "Catwoman" with Halle Berry, I'm not really wanting Catwoman to come in on the next film if there's a Riddler or a Penguin because those two are such powerful personalities that adding Catwoman seems like a throwaway. I feel you can one film just involving her, or I have her with another villainess, like Talia al-Ghul, Poison Ivy, or Sugar (the New Ventriloquist). I don't want Angelina Jolie nor Kate Beckinsale because neither of them can really act or are suitable for the role. I suppose I want Michelle Pfeiffer back. She still looks great!

Another actor for Joker? It could work, but I'd feel awful for the one who had to play him due the "reputation" Heath's Joker has attained, along with the screaming fans -- they'll probably eat him alive! But the truth of the matter is, if you're going to have Joke make a cameo, you might has well bring him back entirely! Rumours have circulated that Johnny Depp is interesting in playing the Joker. I can see him doing a great job as the Joker. Truthfully, it's not a difficult role to mimic; I've seen a lot of fans dressed as Heath's Joker that do stunning impressions of him that I can really see anyone able to do him. The problem is doing him right.

Aging cream? C'mon. A genuine seasoned actor with some years on him would be needed to play Miller's DK, not the American version of Russell Crowe.

There shouldn't be a Batman 3.

But of course, that just me.

I was kind of kidding about the aging cream part, because so many people would want bale in the role  (Becuse he IS the best Batman since George Clooney)* I persoanlly wouldn't mind another actor especially if it's ten years later.

My dream title would be 'The Dynamic Duo' and it would be the introduction of Robin, wearing a kevlar type suti like Batman, with black arms and legs and burghandy center piece. Played by _______________ (idk).

The Movie would open with the Rogues gallery, minus the Joker, sitting around a dark room. A man stands in the front talking, the various baddies are shown until the speaker is revealed... Hush. Through out the movie Hush uses the villains like pawns and commits several crimes, leading to Batman being over worked, until a night at the circus has him meet a young boy, they connect and pretty soon... there is a Boy Wonder. And the two clean up the city, and the World's Greatest Detective links it all back to Hush and eventually the Dynamic Duo makes their way to Hush and defeats him in a climactic fight, with the city cleaned of the masked mad men (and women).

The over villianing seems pointless, but it would show off the gallery and get them locked up and thus effectivly lead to the end of the trilogy. It ends with Bruce and Dick sitting in Wayne Manor, windows open. Alfred walks in with a tray of tea and says, 'It's quite silent tonight.' To which Bruce replies 'There's a first for everything.' Credits roll.

in a post credit Scene of Robin bumming around the internet on the Bat Cave computer, an email arrives and he opens it. Inside the email is a short letter, talking about forming up a new team, Robin reads and kind of laughs, then looks down and sees who the letter is from... Superman. The name isn't shown until Dick runs off yelling for Bruce, then the name is shown.

All leading up to the Justice League Movie!

*I'm not picking on Bale, but over all I don't think he's a great Batman. He's good, but he's not Great... I prefer the animated Batman with Kevin Conroy, he's what I picture batman sounding like as 'Batman' deeper but not 'WheRawrrawr Iarwrwrwr Sheawrwrwrwra!'

Oh, hell no.

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it for as long as I have to: The Riddler should not be allowed anywhere near the sequel. His schtick was all about leaving clues and puzzles to his next crime/murder, and Ledger's Joker has already done that better than the Riddler ever could. Seriously, the Joker left DNA samples of his intended victims on a playing card strapped to a murdered Batman impersonator. How the hell could any portrayal of the Riddler ever compete with that?

If the Riddler were to be reinvented as a detective to help the GCPD track down the Batman, then that might be okay. But seriously, if they're going to go that route, then either Bane or Deadshot would be a far better candidate, in my opinion.

As for the Penguin... again, how can he compete? The Penguin could never be a physical or mental match for Batman the way Joker was, and there's no way he could cause Batman emotional agony the way Two-Face did.

Pffttt!

Riddler and Penguin are fantastic characters! If done right, they could equal Heath Ledger's Joker, maybe even surpass it. I don't understand why everyone harps on Ledger's Joker. He was an excellent, not Oscar-worthy, but still extremely well done and very enjoyable. Yet Paul Molnar's Joker from "Patient J" was far superiour in my opinion; Molnar was the Joker of my dreams -- and nightmares! And I stand by that! If you haven't seen Molnar, DO SO! He'll blow you away!

Joker may be the most famous and most loved of Batman's Rogues Gallery, but he has some great characters. Riddler and Penguin are two favourites and those are the two that have been discussed. I think it works.

Bane and Deadshot, yes, are great. Hopefully they're not on the same bill, as I prefer good ol' Bane to have a solo act against the Dark Knight, instead of the usual TWO which the Nolan films have been doing. I love Bane, although I'm not a huge fan of Deadshot.

I think that it would be great to have Deadshot as a villain, but if they don't put him in then I reckon that the villain should be Thalia al Ghul (If thats how you spell it) Although Raz al Ghul wasn't my favorite villain, i think it would certainly have potential to work.

A secret part of me really wants to see Harley Quinn, but I guess tat would be knid of similar to the Joker and hard to pull off.
There should not be a Joker cameo, I really think that they should just leave the character alone.

An awesome ending would be Batman ending up in Arkham.

No, I'm not a big TT fan, I thought with Robin messing around the internet, maybe watching random Youtube videos, it'd be more believeable than Bruce doing it.

i thought the whole post was a joke, sorry, but i agree TT is a bit of a silly concept, not far short of watchmen babies. besides, if supes wanted to get batman to join the justice league he would just fly to gotham and hunt him down. the concept of superman posting on youtube is more unbelieveable than Bruce doing it!!

here's an slightly more serious idea for a 3rd batman, how about it be set in the future with nightwing and have batman only appear in flashbacks of when greyson met him for the first time, or something.

I hope there is a brief Joker cameo where Batman walks by his cell in Arkham. That would be epic. He doesn't have to say anything, he just has to look at Batman smile.

As for villains, I think Johnny Depp would be a perfect Riddler. If they do choose the Riddler it will be interesting to see what they do with him. I also agree that Batman needs a physically equal or superior opponent, so I think Bane would be perfect for that.

I have a question:

I forget if they showed Arkham Asylum in the last two movies. Did they?

If they didn't then this would be a great time to introduce it. Hopefully it'll look like it always does: a huge, looming building on the top of a hill.

yes... lots, in Batman Begins, it's where the scarecrow is based. it's sort of a converted gothic manor if i rememeber rightly. there's a cool bit where batman jumps down the centre of a stairwell encased by a swarm of bats he has summoned with his sonic thing... awesome.

i have been playing MK Vs DC and i was thinking, how about is Deathstroke were in it, bought in to track down batman or something :S
