I don't mind being the smartest man in the world. I just wish it wasn't this one.

Rorschach: No. Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise.

Here's a great line that won't be in the film...

"by Alan Moore"

Not a line, but the Comedian's body language and actions after Laurie is dragged from him following the crimebusters meeting.
This, combined with his extremely powerful "Only once" line later in the novel really brings a whole other side to the comedian which is forgotten all too easily when throwing words like sociopath around.

Yeah, exactly. On some levels, I think Veidt and the Comedian are truly the most compassionate characters of the book.

Yes, Veidt is an interesting one.
It's when he is forced to kill Bubastis that it really shows, also a really sad scenario, gets me every time the same as "Only once"

That 'forgive me' line actually makes me think... maybe Veidt feels sorrow because he destroyed something he had created that was 'perfect,' unlike the society that required sacrifice. Interesting.

Oh, also, Rorschach's lines when he's talking back to Big Figure. Classic.

The amount of different opinions and outlooks on Watchmen i've found coming here today are fantastic.
I am the only person i know well and spend time with who has read it, and the several discussions i've become involved in really are interesting.

Sorry for going off topic, but i just realised it reading Method's last post the amount of different viewpoints of this novel and wanted to give some feedback.

Continue..

Yes, the whole big figure scene really is fantastic. Oh, he's quick witted that young Kovaks.

It's almost like a throwback to things he would say 'back in the day' - makes me want to see Rorschach go up against more people that he can actually strike fear into, rather than getting outwitted by Veidt. I also like his quips about the toilet, and at Happy Harry's - "Roy Chess. How's your game?"

And of course his Human Bean Juice comment.
Seems there is small room for comedy in his tormented mind.

The funny part is, nobody else ever seems to appreciate it for some reason...

Well, coming from Rorshach i guess even jokes can be harrowing.
I could make some kind of connection to Comedian's view of the world as a joke, but to be honest, it's too late.

Well, Rorschach does openly like the Comedian, so it'd be a fair assessment. They're both cynical and have dry humor.

It's hard for me to just pick one line from the novel, because the artwork and dialogue work so well together, so I'm going to cheat and add some wordless panels to my favorite lines. I absolutely love the interaction between Malcolm Long and Rorschach, especially the Rorschach test (VI,page 4 and 5)

-"Well Walter? What do you make of it?"
-"Some nice flowers."
-"Wonderful. Walter, I'm very pleased with your responses this afternoon and I want you to know that. I really think there's hope, Walter. Don't you?
-The look on Rorschach's face in the next panel is absolutley priceless.

Also, everything Dr. Manhattan says in chapter IV is so poignantly sad it kills me, but of course:
-The light...the light is taking me to pieces.

Rorschach's humour is usually sarcasm directed at his victim of the moment, so while we can be amused by his snappy one-liners, I can see it could be difficult to laugh while someone's crushing a glass in your hand.

My favorite Rorschach one liner is:

That's what they're saying about me now? That I'm paranoid?

"A live body and a dead body contain the same number of particles. Structurally, there's no discernible difference. Life and death and unquantifiable abstracts. Why should I be concerned?" --Dr. Manhattan, Ch. 1

"But the world is so full of people, so crowded with these miracles that they become commonplace and we forget... I forget." --Dr. Manhattan, Ch. 9

"Hmm. That's quite a drop." --Detective, Ch. 1 (haha, just love that big dramatic way we move up to the top of the building, and then such a simple statement)
