I'm sure an equivalent could be done in motion pictures, but it would require quite a radical rethinking of how the material was presented. The GN broke new ground in how comics were structured: it might require a similar rethink of how movies are presented.

you're right, but ZS was never really going to be the director to do that. maybe if someone like darren aronofsky did it. :?

I thought both were great. The movie did do a great job adapting the book in my opinion which I doubted Snyder could (or anyone in that matter) even though it was a far from perfect film. The ending I thought was alot better than it was in the book and it was tied up a bit more elegantly. However, I have never seen a movie that was better than the book but I can't really call the film an actual film and it is impossible for me to rate. I did have a fantastic experience all 6 times that I have seen Watchmen but it would be impossible to even touch the novel.

Prefer the movie to the comic?

You may as well ask if I prefer a picture of sea scallops with a white wine and garlic sauce to the actual dish.

i think only somebody who has watched the movie first and then read the book could prefer the movie to the book. i´ve noticed this to be a rather common phenomenon, and i believe it has much to do with first impressions and the visual impact power movies have. they tend to influence our perception, simply because they challenge our imagine less. books and also comic books request more active involvement from the consumer, you take part in the progress of story-telling, you actively work in your mind to fill the blanks left between pages, panels and speech balloons. a movie doesn´t ask this of you. mind, i´m not dissing one medium and applauding the other, i just feel there is this difference in perception, and whichever medium gets to you first will change this perception and influence your reaction of the story´s rendition in another medium.

i´ve read the GN countless times and i´m deeply familiar with it - which is why i was so intrigued with the movie, because it did the GN justice in so many ways i wouldn´t have thought possible, in some ways even surpassing the original. still, a worthy adaptation, but to me, the GN will always be the "true" incarnation.

OK... so I watched the movie. I watched the DF and Under The Hood. I watched the motion comic. Overall, I have a rather good feel for the franchise. I know... I know... I haven't read the actual book. But how different can it be from the Motion Comic? I doubt it's different enough to sway my view.

Right now I feel that the Movie was actually better than the book. I did enjoy all the side elements (news stand) and all the supporting characters. But not having them in the movie did not hurt it. I thought the movie changed and cut the right things. I do think that Mason's death should've been in it, and I'm sure it will be in the final DVD release. Outside of that, I thought the movie did a better job then the book.

I knew nothing about Watchmen. Movie... Book... side material... I was introduced to all of that just in the last 3-4 weeks. So I'm coming in without any pre-determined mind sets of what the movie "should-be". I saw the movie first and then checked out the source material. And based on what I saw, I felt the movie was more enjoyable.

AYB Gerrardo joke account?

Ok, I thought that there were two versions of Watchmen, one that was layed out like a comic, and one that was written as a novel.
I wasn't thinking when I head 'graphic' in the title.
I now know that it means pictures. So please forgive my idiocy, that was a terrible first impression to this forum

And since this thread is going nowhere, I suppose you can just reply and say... whether the GN was better than the movie?

Ah, well, it happens ;)
Anyway, there is already a thread going on that debates if the GN was better than the movie. Here's a link to it. http://watchmencomicmovie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2921
I'm betting this thread gets merged there, so I'm letting you know ahead of time so you don't think it got deleted. I think I've already posted in that thread too...if not I'll see you there. :D

[NOTE: Yup. Merged. --"Curiosity Inc."]

The film can't possibly be better than the book. It's only a live action shortened version of the book.

It is extremely rare that an adaptation is better than the source material. The Godfather would be a shining example.

despite the end being changed, and a bit of character development between brody and the fish guy, yeah.

Definitely. When I finally got to read Fight Club, I was very dissappointed by it. The film is definitely better.

does twilight count since the book is awful beyond imagination whereas the movie is merely bad?

After I saw the movie, I read the GN,
because everyone said that it was far better, even the top in the comic book genre.

I still find that I prefer the movie,
but I think it is rather a question of taste, than quality.
In general I prefer motion picture to the comic books.

I like the movie, but I find the GN more interesting,
more multi-layered, and there are aspects of it, which of course can't be transferred to a movie,
and I am constantly thinking about it, and also reading this forum.

The athmosphere of the GN is so cold and alienating,
the characters are not sympathetic,
that the emotional reception is harder than taking it in mentally.
I have found the movie shocking in an intellectual way,
but the minor /well, this can be argued/ changes to the plot and the characters (and of course the fact, that I saw real people , not two dimensional drawings) made me feel a strange sort of empathy for all of them despite what they did.

That is my subjective opinion,
and I am looking forward to the dvd release,
to see how much I'd like the movie after the GN.
