Ah, the Mayan prediction that the world will end on December 21, 2012. Conspiracy theorists rejoice, the director of Independence Day and the Day After Tomorrow is making a movie concerning the event. The movie's special effects are awesome (The USS John F. Kennedy rides a tidal wave and crashes into the White House in the theatrical trailer.)

While the movie looks pretty fun, I cannot watch natural disaster movies. They bother me way more than I'd like.

Anyone think this'll be any good?

Hell yeah! But only if there is an edit with all the soapy, jingoistic, daytime-tv quality scriptwriting and acting removed. A good hour of pure CGI destruction and mayhem free from the thinnest veneer of drama, thanks. Then i can put my headphones on and blast some Lightning Bolt without thinking I might be missing some 'plot'.

I'd sooner watch Transformers 2. Say what you will about Michael Bay, but I'd contend that he's still nowhere near the hack that Roland Emmerich is. Plus, I'm pretty sure that anyone who's seen the trailer will have pretty much seen the whole damn movie.

I'm still going to go see it. I have a thing for 'end of the world' flicks.

The first teaser in which we see a buddhist monastry destroyed by giant waves that come over the mountains scared the shit out of me. Seriously, I've got lots of respect for the ocean, and intimidating scenes like this are able to freak me out more than most other ever could.

So I was quite psyched about this movie after the teaser, but the actual trailer was a big downer. Yet another potentially great experience seems to be ruined by the desperate need for a plot, especially one about a family. I really liked some of the catastrophe parts in 'The Day After Tomorrow', but the forced story about the estrangend family ruined the whole thing. I just want to see destruction, mayhem and disaster in a disaster movie. Okay, it would be okay if it actually was a good story, but not too much of it. ;)

Ah, well, there's hoping, I think I'm gonna give it a try...

I'm more looking forward to the actual 2012. The curiosity is killing me!

LOL. I find it funny in the trailer how the people keep trying to get away. It's the end of the fucking world, we HAVE to die!

I personally think that the whole 2012 thing is a load of bullocks. But I've been wrong before.

I wish I knew what the music was in the trailer, though.

And anyone else find it strange that in all the end of the world movies, the USA almost always has a black president?

This movie clearly has a big budget... why does it look like the camerawork was done on HD and not film? For some reason that really bugs me... except in Michael Mann films.

Also... I too am curious for the actual 2012.

Same here.

I know that there is absolutely zero logical reason to believe that the world will really end in three years. But as I look at the state of the world today, some tiny part of me wishes that it'll be true.

I'm sure something will happen. People have been talking about this date for too long for nothing to happen. We might see something mundane like some hackers create a computer virus, or something more serious like a terrorist attack planned to take advantage of the date.

Holy Fuck! You are intense!

I'm hoping for the storied Apocalypse, but an apocalypse more along the lines of the one presented in Alan Moore's Promethea; remember, the definition of "apocalypse" is "prophetic revelation," and doesn't have to include giant tidal waves or nukes.

Stay optimistic, man. Don't let the (insert hated group here) get you down.

Deep Impact... ugh.

They covered this on The Colbert Report, I'm sure you can find it on YouTube.

Entirely possible.

Still, I doubt it'll lead to anything drastic. True disasters always come without warning, after all.

If you really look into it, it's completely, factually untrue that "many cultures" predict something will happen on 12/21/12, or even in the year 2012 itself. It's almost entirely the Mayans, and all the date signifies is the next cycle in their calendar beginning. Their calendar cycles roughly match up with our astrological cycles. We'll be moving into the Aquarius cycle.

Apparently in 2012 the sun will be eclipsed by the center of the galaxy and the planets will all be aligned, or something like that. That's about all that's going to happen. I can't wait until 2013 when nothing has happened, it'll be like Y2K all over again.

Then there's the ridiculous prediction that a huge, never before seen planet will cross paths with Earth and ruin everything. I'd be all for an apocalypse if there would be survivors. I've always wanted to live in a post apocalyptic world. I think it would be the greatest time to ever live ... post apocalyptically.

Think about that. You have no idea where your next meal is coming from, you have no idea who your neighbors are, no idea of what's going on ... you've got to wing it all just to survive. What fun. I'd love it.

In any event, we're going to be fine. Many doomsday prophecies have come and gone, and lo, we are still here.

I really find it funny the possibility that this is the first tragic and epic disaster that warned us for over a hundred years.

I personally find the whole apocolypse thing to breakdown like this

2012 < Y2K

That's how worried I am about 2012 being the end, becuase I read an article the other day where most of the alleged "happenings" were rebuked sciency like, I'll go try to find it

Funny how in these apocalyptic-type scenarios, we always see ourselves as the sole survivor.
A fairly common thread in the arts.

Well, the doctor interrupted me just about then,
Sayin, "Hey I've been havin' the same old dreams,
But mine was a little different you see.
I dreamt that the only person left after the war was me.
I didn't see you around."

Well, now time passed and now it seems
Everybody's having them dreams.
Everybody sees themselves walkin' around with no one else.
